London is officially 'filthy'
Discussion
When I used to commute on the Northern Line from Euston to London Bridge, this is the scene every morning. I didn't squeeze myself in (human contact no thanks) I was lucky if I got on the 3rd train to arrive, unlike Japan though there are no porters around to push you in - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R0FanSTyOw

The overwhelmed infrastructure - roads, buses, tube etc.
The volume of people per sq meter
The commute via jubilee line to canary wharf - face in people's arm pits
The cost of everything
Lack of housing / garden
Lack of off road / on road parking
The general state of the roads where some very expensive houses resided
The strange folk
People drinking (used to at least) on the tube at 7am
The fact it was almost a Mecca for scammers
Etc.
The biggest thing was the tube - I absolutely detested that with a passion.
I could go on...
ok, that's enough, thanks. I guess you could say it is like many metropolitan areas of the UK, but magnified..?The volume of people per sq meter

The answer has been obvious for several decades: encourage motorcycling.
In theory this is a good idea, to be honest though I hate riding a motorbike in London, people not looking before pulling out/moving and knocking you off, the endless red traffic lights, not to mention the high likleyhood you could come back and your bikes been nicked, motorcycle and scooter theft are sky high in London. In fact come to think of it, there just isn't a form of transport personal or public that's remotely pleasant to get around London with.

London's the only true World city on the planet. Its gonna get knocked about a bit and careworn. That's part of the charm of the place.
Best city on the world. Nowhere can match it. Not even close.
Hmm... what's a "world city"?Best city on the world. Nowhere can match it. Not even close.
We match or surpass anywhere else on Earth in history, business, finance, art, music, theatre, sport, culture, museums, universities. Nearly every language on the planet is spoken here. Nearly every culture has a presence or a population living here.
We held an Olympics and barely missed a beat. In three years' time, we could host a World Cup by ourselves. We're France's 7th largest city by population. No other city can match us. Some can equal us in one or two aspects. Individual cities may even exceed us in a couple.
London knocks any other city into a cocked hat.
That.

A city that looks far beyond its nation's boundaries. One that is almost independent of its parochial borders. London's influence is far, far greater than similar sized cities. We influence the world in many ways. London's economy is huge. London's economy and tax revenues from the city enriche the lives of millions around the country and beyond.

San Francisco matches up quite well. As does Washington DC. Depends on where you draw your city boundary to include universities, etc. Personally I love SF. It has an energy that even London lacks (outside of Financial Services where London is awesome).
London has a buzz that nowhere else in the UK has (unsurprisingly).
If you want opportunities and are willing to work your arse off for it, then it is there for the taking. Some of the brightest and best people are here - it is very different to the rest of the UK and the only place I feel at home.
As a Londoner I don't like being out of the city. Except to go for a thrash in the cars of course!

London's for the young. Once you wise up you ship out and pop back for the odd gin in a jam jar for the novelty.
London sucks in the young, makes them feel special on their shiny salary + London weighting and milks them until most realise they aren't going to make it to the top, and they don't have enough left to afford a pot to piss in beyond their grotty house share. At which point they scurry off somewhere cheaper and are replaced with the next generation. The remaining 'make it' and get to stay.Vaud said:

San Francisco is my favourite us city. However, it really can't compare to London. Where does it exceed what London has to offer? Fog? As for Washington. Not even Trump wants to live there.San Francisco matches up quite well. As does Washington DC. Depends on where you draw your city boundary to include universities, etc. Personally I love SF. If you like dirt, overcrowding, obnoxious arrogant people, ludicrous prices, noise etc then it's wonderful. It's horses for courses isn't it. I've got several friends who left both Sheffield and Devon to move to London, love it and have done very well.
However, I remember visiting one of my mates when he worked in Streatham for a couple of years. I was living and working in Cheltenham at the time and remember being struck by what an utter stehole Streatham was.
I like visiting London, but I would never want to live there (or in any other big city come to that).

Well, there's London and then there's SOUTH London. However, I remember visiting one of my mates when he worked in Streatham for a couple of years. I was living and working in Cheltenham at the time and remember being struck by what an utter stehole Streatham was.

SF Moma. The Bay. Trams. A more compact "downtown". A different diversity of restaurants than London (more Asia/Pacific). Much more friendly and chilled people.
I you want the best "city" then I'd also look at Portland, Seattle, Boulder and Austin. All relatively low-rise, nice size, good food, etc.
If I had to move tomorrow then I'd probably pick Boulder. None are anything like London which is an overgrown, overpriced, dirty hole of a city.
