London is officially 'filthy'

I went for a run at rush hour last Friday evening. When I was most of the way back there was a noticeable taste of diesel fumes in my throat. Obviously this is anecdotal, but to say that diesel engines aren't a significant contributor to the pollution must be a long way off the mark and I cannot see what gas central heating has to do with the obvious diesel fumes in the local air.
Combustion of gas produces lots of PM2.5 and other stuff.FredClogs said:
I can always tell when I've been to London, my bogies are really dark and gritty and taste like diesel, it's disgusting.
Serves you right for eating them then! Edited by hidetheelephants on Tuesday 24th January 06:39
I don't see the problem. Back in the 80s I used to cycle around London and the air was rubbish - mainly Routemasters knocking out clouds of smoke. Black snot all round. I haven't had black snot for about 20 years. I ran 6.5 miles across London last night (running home hurts, but it is better than the circle line), not a problem, no black snot, all fine.
Life expectancy remains higher in London than the Highlands of Scotland - the only material pattern is related to poverty.

But but but diesel engines power the world, marine, rail, military, power generation, buses, freight transport, but of course it's all primarily the fault of car users, who must be punished according to the politically correct, apparently. Some of the filthiest pollution from others though.
On another note, remember that consultation they did about the M1, 60mph speed limits because of alleged pollution? The consultation that got a response so against the proposals that they said they would have to go away and think again. Well they're going to do it anyway. Blanket 60mph from 7am onwards right through into the evening.

The main source of the problem is not private diesel cars in London, it is near-continent industrial pollution.
That won't stop the usual muppets trying to ban/blame cars.
If you want to talk about local pollution topping it up you'd have to look at banning fashionable wood stoves, gas central heating boilers, haulage and industry in London before banning private diesel cars.
so the current windless conditions bring more pollution from mainland Europe somehow? That won't stop the usual muppets trying to ban/blame cars.

You should try a major city in India - now THAT'S what I call pollution! Even my tear ducts were full of black particulate matter after a day on the streets of New Delhi...
Yep. I never got sunburnt in Mumbai even though it was 35 degrees+ and the height of summer. You can't even see the sun, such is the smog... FiF said:

What's that got to do with air pollution on London's roads which is caused by traffic? And what has political correctness got to do with anything? This attitude against being able to breathe air that won't kill you is bizarre.

So remove what limited protection cyclists have.so.encouraging people back into cars? Make bus transport even slower than cars thus removing any benefit the bus has in that it has taken 15-20 cars off the road at any one time? You are Chris Grayling and ICMFP.

Glad someone else has noticed it!, a lot of people seem conditioned to believe its all good and virtually harmless, Our lungs have not evolved for thousands of years to cope with breathing in the cancerous toxins contained within the man made chemical called diesel, quite ironic it has "die" at the start!. boxxob said:

However, most cyclists limited protection is the result of their own lack of caution and awareness....

People on the thread are mainly, not totally, concentrating on pollution from diesel cars versus petrol. Yet diesel engines are used in many more applications than private cars. The only notable method of transport that it hasn't touched to any degree is air transport. This attitude against being able to breathe air that won't kill you is bizarre.
Whatever the future is for compression ignition engines people need to realise that there are many facets to modern life that need to be considered and not just private cars.
You don't have to be Einstein to concluded that if you have thousands of combustion engine vehicles in a limited space you have problems.
On a still day or fog exhaust fumes won't go anywhere but stay at a low level.
You basically breathing in poison which might or will shorten your live.
Of course we have the freedom to travel in our cars which we pay dearly for.But let's not pretend we are not quilty myself included of pollution our envirioment.

Fortunately Einstein had a brain and looked for the truth and didn't jump on political bandwagons. On a still day or fog exhaust fumes won't go anywhere but stay at a low level.

The source air (continental pollution) is nearly always the root of the problem, topped up by stoves and Gas Central Heating Boilers.

You might like to read 'Scare Pollution' by Steve Milloy, it's about the EPA (USA) but the fraudulent use of science to promote scares about PMs NOX etc. and impose a political agenda/control is common.
