The link I posted (written after the rule change and hence allowing for It) suggests it's not as awkward as you think. Are you also sure you should be noting your wife is "self sufficient"? My understanding is that you should not as she isn't (from what you've posted). For a spouse that should not prejudice an application (from the link and others), but it may mean you don't get pointed at a form whose questions lead to the wrong answers.

Have you sought advice on this from a professional?

Cool.

I guess I can be thankful my OH is from the People's Republic of Yorkshire.

Good luck.

It is a tough situation MrrT, but as others have said, not applying for permanent residency anywhere that you've lived for so long is gambling that rules and regulations will not alter. To an extent, you have my sympathy, but on the other hand, you have to understand how and why the UK government has acted?
Quite, someone comes to the UK, doesn't work or pay any tax for 10 years, it's not really a surprise that they may be treated differently one way or another at some point is it.
If she was from outside the UK and had entered on a bride/marriage visa none of this would apply.

I also pay plenty of tax for both of us.

That's the trouble though - status was not fully ratified. As a rule, most nations are generally run for the benefit of their citizen primarily and visitors of whatever sort are a lower priority.

It's a bit like going on holiday without travel insurance; it's not a problem until, all of a sudden, it is.

Best way - move forward decisively and minimise the uncertainty.

29th March, a day John Major already celebrates as being his birthday.

Poor John will have another celebration now, one he won't be quite so keen to get the champagne out for.

Historically, I've not been one for schardenfruede , but since the EU vote and even, again, with Trumpy getting elected , I've come to be relaxed with it, in fact, in those two cases it can be entirely enjoyable, the hysterics of some never ceases to amaze me , or indeed make me laugh. Hugely amusing for Major , he'll be spitting his peas all over the shop biggrin

"Brexit Secretary David Davis said the UK was now 'on the threshold of the most important negotiation for this country for a generation'."

Is that an English generation or a Scottish one?
