Making America Great Again! Goodnight.
When do you feel America was great?

Not really wanting to get personal but did you move there - Did you think it was 'great' under Bush when you moved there? Or was it longer ago and you moved there when it was terrible?

Trump speaks like it's much longer than ten years ago talking about heavy industries which have left etc.

So from this I can only assume you moved there when you thought it was terrible which seems like a strange choice?

aircraft carriers are quite possibly the most useless military capability you could wish to acquire in this day and age.
I'm no expert, but if any country wanted to invade the UK it would have to come via the sea. Carriers no use against terrorism or taking on inferior middle eastern countries, but surely for your traditional old fashioned wars, proper protection from proper opponents requires a navy with air support?

I have no problem with aircraft carriers. They do have a use.

The question is why Trump feels that a massive increase in US arms spending is necessary at this point in time.

Or is he just making noise to impress the Trumpeteers?

And any country's navy apart from another nuclear one would be wiped off the face of the earth if they tried to invade via the sea and would scarper fairly bloody quickly. Nuclear powers don't get invaded.

If it was another nuclear power then well it's probably the end of the world anyway.

Unlike the BBC I am able to see both sides and in this case I don't agree with trump's need to increase military spending. Unless he knows something we don't!

Don't let a pointless discussion on whether aircraft carriers are needed or not drag the debate away from the pertinent question.

WHY did Trump feel the need to make that announcement?

Is the American military currently in a state where it cannot cope with the demands placed on it?

Does it see future threats that it feels it wouldn't be able to counter?

What programmes would Trump be prepared to spend more money on.

Al,l I have heard from him up to now are complaints that TOO MUCH money is being spent on some current programmes. Indeed, he also has made great play that the US military would be far less involved in activities around the world - so LESS military spending would seem to make more sense - if he really means what he says.

As ever, the guy makes totally contradictory statements - often within the same sentence.

Trump campaigned on the promise of jobs from memory and according to The Washington Times so it can't be really fake news.

Did anybody say it was?

It may not be fake - but it is rather nebulous.

My question is what programmes is he planning on funding - and how is he going to raise those funds?

We aren't hearing an awful lot of any practical governing coming out of the The Donald.

It's all rather vague statements and pronouncements.

He also stated he had a 'secret plan' to eradicate ISIS within 30 days. It's the kind of conspiratorial nonsense that some here would buy into.

I understand that he was well supported by serving and ex military? He is looking to get re elected.

Reagan expanded the military spending with a real threat, the cold war was still a reality. But the numbers appear to show that the manpower remained what it was. Projects like Star Wars ate up money? Actual number appear to drop off after Clinton?

Where will the money go. If he builds more ships, not as a replacement then they need crewing, more tanks, the same. Technology and nukes, well, just need a few red buttons.

So he did. That was almost one of those "I remember where I was when" moments.

You know what will follow if ISIS are still around in future - he didn't specify which 30 days, and the 30th may not arrive for some time.

Good point.

Maybe, in some quarters, one side of a line of overlapping craters can be thought of as a wall.

His secret plan was to beat them at golf.
