For the record I did not attend the DNC...
Really? Well I guess you have no reason to lie but it certainly sounded like you did...

Four Star General John Allen, former head of US forces in Afghanistan and one of our most decorated military heroes, gave a great speech tonight surrounded by military veterans. A complete evisceration of Trump, a thunderous speech. Starts at 2.07

Earlier Rev William Barber had the whole hall on their feet with a barnstormer of a speech. I don't have a religious bone in my body but even I was moved by this speech.

Donald Trump should watch this speech by Khizr Khan, father of an American hero and be ashmed of himself. If you're not moved by this you're probably already dead. Brilliant, heartfelt speech that is truly what America is about.

Katy Perry is singing for us now. Which is nice.

Next president due up soon.
Us? And no, Katy Perry singing is not nice.

Lovely video about Clinton playing as part of her intro after Chelsea's introductory speech. Morgan Freeman narrating.

When "dumb" people get it right, what does that make those in the wrong accusing them of being so? Uber-dumb?

On the Spicer/GCHQ debacle, it's now being said that

- Spicer spoke unintentionally (How does one even do that? "The words, they come out of my mouth, you see, but I don't intend them to. I intend other words to come out. Or not words. I need to work on control of my mouth I suppose"

- Spicer was simply pointing to what the press reports were, not endorsing them. Really? That's the job of the WH Press Sec now? To read out bits of the internet?

Spicer seems to be a *major* problem, on account of being a bit thick, having a big mouth, and talking without thinking a lot. What really puzzles me is why he hasn't been fired. He is consistently more harmful than beneficial for the administration so why is he still around?

I realise it is fictional, but there is an excellent West Wing episode in which CJ, the consummate professional and master of the press sec role has to hand over to Josh because she's had dental work and can't speak. The problems that flow from Josh being cocky and loose with language and played out very well. A bit later the problems of Toby taking on the role and being an ass to the press corps are similarly well observed. Spicer needs to watch these. On a perpetual loop.
He is the mouth piece for the organ of government. He would have been commenting under orders. I think Bannon is very much pushing stuff from the media he likes. It is interesting watching what comes out the Whitehouse then what is lauded on the far right/conspiracy web sites. There certainly does appear to be a concerted effort and this episode seems quiet?

Poor unrep; what started as a knowledgeable and amusing systematic destruction of every Republican candidate turned into an ikky love in for Hillary, especially when it became obvious he was actually attending the DNC conference despite not being able to vote. Throw in some epic trolling by our resident plastic redneck 5.0 and it all got a bit tragic.
Seems a bit unnecessarily stty. Especially all the digging up of old posts. I thought that was always a bit frowned upon in here?

Come come, give them a break. They've had nothing to celebrate since November.

It's okay when it is funny!

I was in Mexico after Trump swept to victory and they were interviewing a senator from Florida asking how this could have happened and how HRC could have lost.

He told them since becoming a senator many years ago he had done hundreds of jobs, working on the bins, working in a hospital etc. He claimed to understand how working people felt and he had seen the mood change. They were sick of politicians who had done nothing but be a politician, who only associated with politicians and only can out when elections were due.

His party had become detached, too elite telling people who were working hard they knew better. They would have elected anyone with a differing story, Trump had that story. Only a small percentage cared about him being a sexist, many me are, what they saw was a guy who promised jobs and to put ordinary working Americans first. They do not care what Beyoncé thinks about Trump they want the American dream back.

He seemed to be have a grip on what needed to be done but instead he said his party was too hell bent on making sure these people who voted for Trump were painted as racist sexist idiots instead of then trying to engage and understand what made him their choice.

And from what I can see they are still not doing anything other than trying to ridicule Trump and his supporters, trying to point out that the metropolitan areas should count more than Nebraska or wherever as they clearly did not understand, rather than rebuild the trust they lost with Americans in some areas.

We are in for a roller coaster ride that is for sure.

I wish people kept away from the personal attacks - on either side of the argument.

Trump himself provides plenty of ammunition to generate volumes of debate and discussion. Littering the thread with attacks on posters is a right pain and a distraction.

Flynns payments from foreign media are sailing well under the parapet. Whilst not illegal, there are certainly some questions and one or two processes that may have been avoided. They are still checking that one.

It's dropped off the radar a bit on the news outlets over here.

However, if you watch the US news channels (even Fox) you will see that the Flynn situation is still being actively discussed.

And now a security agent has had a laptop stolen. They are not saying what is on it but there is speculation the the details for Trump Tower are on it. Some indication that the pass card and codes were also with the laptop.

Someone will be looking at their P45 soon.

I thought it was compulsory for someone carrying highly sensitive data on a laptop to have it stolen (or left in a bus, taxi, train etc) - at least once in their career.

I suspect that there will either be a congressional inquiry or a special prosecutor to look into Flynn. It's clear he was acting for foreign governments at the same time as he was working with the campaign. They are looking into the whole Russia connection and I think there is a lot going on behind the scenes that we don't know about.

What is the realistic outcome when the GOP are in charge? Not being familiar with what appears to be a partisan system, looking in from the outside that is.

I'll stick my neck out and say there will categorically NOT be any inquiries into Flynn. No matter how much noise there is. Trump has moved the narrative on. We're now on to wiretaps. And as soon as people try to pin Trump down on this issue he will create another distraction. His opponents are punching fog.

Let me put it another way - he ran on a platform of creating better relationships with Putin and the Russians and enough voters were happy with this for him to get elected. So why waste time and energy on trying to prove the Flynn/Russia relationship when the population doesn't care?

i generally agree with that eric. the one exception being when someone lambasts and ridicules almost every single person with a different opinion over a long period of time.

a few apologies would not have gone amiss and would have taken all the sting out of the thread upon recommencing posting.

i did have a wry smile when i read the reason my last post was removed. (no problem with that, i support mods decisions at all times).
