Less than half the weight of the old pound coin.

Damn... one of the nice things about current pound coin was the hefty weight. frown

Perhaps it's so secret not even they know!

All new pound coins will contain 4G trackers so that GCHQ can constantly monitor all their whereabouts.

A car park i visited yesterday has 4 ticket machines, 2 of which are out of action.

I'm told the reason is that they have already been upgraded to accept only the new £1 coins. They'll run the machines in tandem until the old coins are fully demised, then they'll upgrade the other 2 machines.

Thruppeny pieces are making a comeback.

I have an old tea caddy full of 'em.
I love the old threepenny bits. My missus has some from the 60s. Occasionally she gets them out for me to have a look at.
To be savoured am sure. hehe
Yes, they're in lovely condition considering their age. She showed them to our neighbour, who is an amateur numismatist and, he told her he was very impressed. He even offered to mount them for a reasonable price, but my missus declined.

Aha
I wonder if this has any bearing on Asda no longer needing coins in their trolleys.
No, it's because Diane Abbott won't be able to chew the new ones when she gets peckish.

Thought you would know that...

I know! Screw throwing 2p at someone's head. If they're worth launching currency at then they're at least worth getting a quid around their head.

Saw my first new £1 coin today. Looked a bit Franklin mint to me, you know, cheap and tacky.

They started making them in 2016, all of the ones I've had so far have been that year

Idiots already listing the 2016 minted coins on ebay for a couple hundred quid as they assume it's rare...you know 1 of half a billion minted is rare these days! wink

There were a few news articles about the test coins being valuable (250,000 minted), which they are to a certain extent, but I think some people were mistaken and wanted to cash in. The test coins have "ROYAL MINT / TRIAL PIECE" on the 'tails' side.

I got to have a proper look at one the other day. Some very interesting features. What I took at first to be random dimples right in the corner of the raised edge, are actually miniscule numbers!
I was also impressed by how they've managed to make a hologram out of a single layer of metal

I got my first two yesterday, and I felt a like a right nerd being excited about them - taking me back to seeing my first point coin at school when they were launched. My only comment is that I think I would
Have preferred for the edges to be more defined and less like a rounded disc.

I got a couple about a week ago from the self service tills at Asda. They do seem to be a bit chipped and marked around the edges for only being out a few weeks. My mother also commented on the ones she had got as well.

I wonder how durable they are.
