Can't see the much talked about 'hologram' lasting long once they've rattled around in pockets, machines etc...

I got a couple maybe two weeks ago, and yes both seemed damaged. No smoothness like a used round pound coin. the edges were chipped and rough.

I've handled a couple of them and they look pretty stty in the flesh (metal) IMO, the edges looked a bit rough and ready.

Guy gave me one as payment for something he was buying from my stall at a car boot sale yesterday. When I said "Oh it's a new one" he said he hadn't noticed, asked for it back and gave me an old one instead. It's very brassy looking so how he hadn't noticed it was in his pocket change I don't know!

What is the point as we move towards a cashless society? Seems a huge waste of time

Probably because none of us will live long enough to see a 'cashless society'.

I use Apple Pay and credit cards etc., but still use plenty of cash for other stuff.

Card readers aren't cheap and I'd expect Apple/credit card companies etc. will take a small cut from each transaction? Until payments are complete free (asides from the cost of the phone) I'd expect cash to be with us for a while yet.

I would say no. I use cashless for a lot of stuff but cash still has a place for smaller purchases and at the pub etc. beer

I put any cash from my pockets on a shelf in the kitchen so that I know where to find it when I need to, often when I come down for breakfast (after the Wife) I find myself cashless...

We are decades away from cashless and the old coin was easy to forge hence the new one.
