My pinto race engine is having a rebuild and although the rods and pistons are undamaged I'm contemplating changing them for more modern bits. Does anyone have experience of using them and what are the benefits over standard cosworth configuration from 30 odd years ago. It will cost about a grand extra on the rebuild and I am unsure if it's worth doing.

There are few downsides to longer rods and shallower pistons.

Lighter and probably shorter skirt pistons, better rod angles should all be favourable.

Especially as a Pinto has fairly short rods to start with.

ZRP do some longer rods in both 5mm and 8mm longer, although obviously you'd need pistons to suit

Is it worth £1k extra to you ?? Who knows, only you can decide as to what power usage, rpm's etc etc and whether any gains might be worth the money

i doubt you will see any tangible benefit to justify the $$$ except in the case that your current parts are deficient or worn and need replacing anyway. almost always the money is spent elsewhere on things that will have a much more significant impact on the performance

Thanks for the replies. The rebuild budget can afford it as the engine has been very reliable since 2009 and low cost over the race seasons.
