I don't know what happened but my original post came as a wiki!
Problem started Friday, the alarm went off for no obvious reason. After turning it off it was ok until saturday evening then went off again. Turned it off and it was ok until sunday afternoon when it kept going off.
Leaving the car unlocked stops the alarm going off as the alarm isn't set, not very good for security.
has anyone got any ideas what's causing this problem?

Just been out for a quick drive.
It was suggested that the battery might be a bit flat! The ammeter is showing that the alternator is delivering just over 14 v.
More worrying is the BATTERY SAVING MODE message that has come up on the dash.

battery saving mode just turns bits off when the engine is not on , check the dash display for charge and voltage , i think it's hold left toggle down when you start the car and then scroll

The message lit up while driving.
I'll have a look at the other bit tomorrow.

probably not good for the battery , have you checked the display voltage and battery charge indicator , mine went to 25 to 30 per cent with regular driving and i still changed it , they tend to just die with not a lot of notice

These are things that I will have a look at Saturday. It's not worth me looking during the week as it's dark when I get home from work.

Not yet mate, going to have a look at it tomorrow. No point looking during the week as it's dark when I get home from work.

Bought a multi meter checked the battery and it shows 12v. The dashboard voltmeter shows 15v. when the engine is running. The battery saving warning has gone. The alarm didn't go off all week until Friday morning and hasn't gone off since. I've no idea what to do now.

Is it a std alarm?. I had a VXR Ro with a toad system on. Lots of issues so had it taken out. Sorted.

Had the same, pull the plug and it was fine... plugged it back in later, fine again. Must have just got a bit wonky with the contacts.
