be careful out there folks
I eat quite a lot of apples. I eat lots of veg and fruit. I also have a sweet tooth and like (home made) cake, I love chocolate, NOT Coke.
I love meat, ie chicken, rump steak etc. I hate crap meat, ie burgers etc (unless home made).
I wouldn't step in a McLibels or similar to save my life - well, it wouldn't would it! hehe
I wouldn't drink Coke (or similar) if you paid me. (I used to drink Coke in the 60s when it was in the glass green bottles).
I did, until recently, used to down one Coke a year to remind me how f. awful it now is. vomit
I no longer need to be reminded! hehe

Oh I suppose exercise should be mentioned. I walk. A lot. Cycle, only occasionally. Other than that, nowt.

My bro in law eats no apples. He eats cake. He likes meat like me. Exercise? Not much. He has a new bike. Well, that's because it's not used!
He, however, drinks Coke (or similar) a LOT! I mean, a LOT!!
He was advised to give up alcohol (poor sod!) by his doc to rid his beer belly. I would only have said he had a 'tummy', plenty dwarf him.
He thinks Coke is harmless. Especially as he buys only 'sugar free'.

I was in his house at the weekend - f me! he has packs of Coke stacked up in the corner of his conservatory. He even drank a can while we chatted.
I said bloody hell are you stocking up. '30 pack' cans were apparently on 'offer' and he was unable to resist!

I have a 30 inch waist.
I hate to think what his is, but at a guess I'd say it has now increased to 42+.

He's almost 30 years my junior.

Coke.
You can f. keep it!!!

My sister drinks nothing but Coke; full fat too, she doesn't like hot drinks, she only drinks Coke, much like your brothers house, her house is full of Coke.

I remember once her asking me to get something out of her car, I didn't find it, however I did find loads of empty Coke cans and also a fair few unopened ones too.

She is obese by the way.

I don't mind Coke, however I can't honestly remember the last time that I drank any.

I don't mind the occasional Coke either, alongside the occasional Big Mac.

lick

I also like the occasional shot of whisky but recognise that drinking it all day every day might not be a good idea.

Sad because, in moderate consumption decent beer has a lot going for it, stuff that's good for the gut and the body. Not least minerals and vitamins.

There is growing evidence that artificial sweeteners can have just as damaging effect on the body's digestive and hormonal system as actual sugar, even if they lack the outright calories of sugar.

I'll happily eat all of it. I just don't eat that much of it. I had a pint of coke two weeks ago as I just fancied something different.

I still drink Coke occasionally, but only the 'gull fat' stuff and not the artificially sweetened stuff.

My dentist mate is a triathlete and reckons Coke (because it can help settle digestion) is his refueling beverage of choice in races.

Love these reports - mayhelp you live longer, could prevent deaths. Not that sure of their findings are they.
No medical research can be done any other way.

if 99.999999999999% of people live longer then they can still only claim that it may make you live longer.

I don't mind the diet stuff but then I don't drink enough of it to make a difference; it's not like I drink any carbonated drinks more than a couple of times a week.

Yeah, I'd drink Coke or similar when playing a sport if I needed the energy.

Getting tiresome...

Are we bksed from global warming yet, or can I venture out of the fridge?
What part of the study do you consider bks?
The bks is the way advice is proffered then reversed then changed again, so many times that it can't be considered valid by any resonable layman.

Red wine good/red wine bad and so on and on and on.

I gave up taking notice long ago. Something will be correct, but identifying it is nigh on impossible.
The only bks is the way it has to be dumbed down for the masses.

1 portion of fruit and veg is better than none. 2 better than 1 etc.
The whole point of 5-a-day or 10-a-day is to set a (achievable) target for people.

Nothing has been reversed here, no-one is saying 5-a-day is bad for you.

Which brings us neatly onto the subject of those obese people who guzzle 'sports' drinks because they "feel tired and need more energy".

I hear a lot of chatter that BMI breaks down when someone becomes very powerfully built.

There have been a few studies conducted into the maximum muscle someone can build without the aid of steroids. It looks like the limit is of an adjusted fat free mass index (FFMI), basically BMI without bodyfat, normalised to a height of 1.8 metres, or 5'11", of 25.

Here's a graph that summarises the researchers' findings into the odds of being drug free at a given FFMI.

So someone who's 5'11" / 1.8 metres tall might have a limit on their lean mass somewhere around 179 lbs / 81 kg. The cutoff point for obesity at that height is 214 lbs / 97 kg, so 16% bodyfat, which is reasonably trim.

But the gym goes who fall into the obese BMI category typically aren't at that theoretical limit of muscle growth, and aren't particularly lean. I know that I was a bit chubby when I had a BMI in the low thirties, and look a lot better now that I'm about 15 kg lighter.

Going the other way, some ethnic groups, particularly Asians, have a lighter body structure, and hence can be at an unhealthy weight despite a normal BMI.

So there are problems with BMI, but I don't think it's as completely useless as turbobloke says. smile
BMI is a useful metric at the level of populations. I think there is too much individual variation for it to be terribly useful for individuals.

I had a DEXA scan, giving me a breakdown of fat, lean tissue and muscle. From that, I back-calculated what my composition would have to be to be at the top, middle and bottom of the "healthy" BMI range.

For a BMI of 25, maximum "healthy" weight, I would weigh 70kg and have a body fat percentage of 15%.
For a BMI of 22.5, middle of the healthy range for my height, I would weigh 63kg and have a body fat percentage of 6%.
For a BMI of 20, bottom of the healthy range, I would weigh 56kg, have 0% body fat, and would have had to lose either 3kg of lean tissue or my skeleton.

I suspect that this is because I have short legs/long torso.

Dont forget Double cheeseburgers at Mcds have a gherkin and Boneless banquets at KFC can have corn on the cob.
I'm killing this fruit and veg lark.
I cannot remember the last time I had a Mcds or BK or KFC it's several years

My chutney makes up 3 of the five (eaten daily) I started making it after brexit because my 3 properties weren't providing enough income - both myself and my wife were at risk of losing our jobs and chutney seems more popular than jam (due to the high sugar content in Jam and the fact that half the fking country are morbidly obese)

So all I need to eat is one more and I can manage that easily - crisps are potatoes right biggrin

Some elements of the previous post are true.

Some elements of the previous post are fiction

Some elements of the previous post are a piss take out of another PH'r

I really do make chutney, fig preserve and fig and orange marmalade - I have a fig tree, I hate waste and google is frankly brilliant if you have a problem and want a solution and the A team turned you down

All the drama about exactly what and how much people need merely to survive, and then you see what dirt poor people get by on for decades in the third world......

Maybe they don't live to be a hundred, but many live long healthy lives on little more than rice, gristley meat and the very occasional vegetable.

And the guys can work labouring jobs that will have most all westerners crawling in the dirt, and the women spawn 8 kids and don't look like elephants....

And no, I'm not saying they are healthier than we westerners, or live illness-free, or are perfect examples of health and fitness, but much of what the 'experts' tell us we HAVE to eat to survive past 40 is a load of tosh. If there was less crap, chemicals, preservatives, growth hormones and basic poison in our food, we'd be a lot healthier all round.

It's 2017. If you live in the UK and are too stupid to eat sensibly then you deserve the consequences.

One of them should be that you're not allowed out in the daytime so the rest of us don't have to see what you've done to yourself.
