993 Engine Rebuild Near Cambridge / South East?
Discussion
Hi All.
My 993 C2S is now at 122000-ish miles and I'm starting to think about a rebuild. I stress *think* as he is running beautifully right now, but I do like to plan forward :-)
Can anyone recommend a good place for rebuilds that is roughly in my area (I'm south of Cambridge)? Ones that spring to mind are Autostrasse in Coggeshall, Barrtech in Cambridge or RPM in Tring.
Also - a more contentious question - are there any views on rebuild vs enhance (e.g. to 3.8)? Resale value is not really a worry as I don't ever plan on selling him...
Any help much appreciated.

122000 miles? A 993 well serviced is easily capable of twice that mileage without a rebuild. I'd bet of you put it on a dyno the old girl would still be pushing out near Porsche stated BHP. Get Wayne to sort you a map and she will probs kick out more than the 3.8.
Last time I looked the 3.8 kit was (I believe) £10K plus VAT but is NLA now.
Unless you've got a smoking engine, you'll be throwing good money away IMO.

These engines are now at the age where oil leaks get more common as the seals break down and o rings get brittle. Not always a huge concern but annoying to many owners. What is always well disguised on the 993 due to the hydraulic tappets is valve guide wear. These are almost certainly toast on the exhaust valves at 122k.
Upgrades like 3.8 are very expensive adding about 5k to the bill if the original barrels and pistons are still ok. Cams and a remap is a better proposition, releasing more torque at far less cost. On the subject of cost, you can save a lot of money using Unit 11 in Warrington compared to the prices you will be quoted down south.
