With the rumoured Samsung S8 due out any time soon and me due an upgrade....

I have always been a Sony fanboy up until two years ago when I didn't fancy the Z3 (latest model at the time, but had been out a while) and went for a HTC One M9 which to be fair, has been brilliant - all but the camera which is woeful. But luckily I don't use the camera much, but that might be down to me knowing it's rubbish, if you follow.

Is the S8 going to be much better than the S7 edge? Like night and day better? Is the Sony XZ going to be replaced anytime soon?

I have all my music and pictures on a 128GB Micro SD, so a micro SD slot is essential, I know the S6 Samsung didn't have a slot, does the S7/S8?

Read a lot of reviews of stuff on the internet, comparisons on TechRadar and the like, but can anyone give me some real world feedback on their S7 or XZ? I leaning towards the S7 Edge as there are some good deals out there clearing the way for the S8 but am also drawn to the XZ.

I have a HTC One M8 (GPE) still and am waiting for something to upgrade to. I was waiting till the Pixel phone last year which didn't do it for me. I'm now waiting for the S8 but not sure if their Android brand will work for me and I would prefer Googles assistant rather than Samsungs. So I will probably wait till October for the Pixel 2...

I occasionally factory reset my phone and it's still just as fast and responsive as ever. It is stuck on Android 6 though so that will be the main driver to update soon.

I think they are following a prime number process... The original S was OK, 2,3,5 and 7 were very good. 4 and 6 were a bit rubbish, so maybe it'll be a long wait? wink

Given their history and competency in software design (a bit crap), and the lack of hardware innovation available at this release date, I doubt it will be a major improvement on the S7.

As it's only 1 week to launch and then probably end of April availability, just wait to see what is confirmed. If it does start at c£700 , and is a minimal increment over the S7, then I can't see a decent reason to get it over the S7.

I'm like you, and have a soft spot for Sony phones, currently got a Z3 which is 2.5 years old.

There is an updated XZ about to launch called the XZs and I think it is due some time next month. Pricing seems to be suggested at £550 to £600 which is a bit optimistic.

I was tempted by the XZ (and I get 20% off the Sony e-store prices via Corporate Perks) but never could quite bring myself to order it. It's a little underwhelming and a bit over-priced even with 20% off (the Sony e-store price is always higher than Amazon etc) and the large top and bottom bezels also put me off. I've ordered a Moto Z when it was on offer last weekend so will see how it get on with that.

If I don't like the Moto then I'll probably go for an XZ/XZs but only after another price drop! (or I'll just get a OnePlus 3T)

I've got an S7 edge and it does take a microSD card. Screen resolution is very good and the camera is excellent as well. Where it falls down is in one handed operation (unless you've got really big hands I guess) and when you want to hold it and watch video or the like - the screen wraps round the edge so far that it can be difficult to hold the phone without touching the screen and activating some functions accidentally.

They are also pretty fragile - they don't drop well - and it's £200 to replace the screen, assuming they have them in stock which was a problem when I broke mine.

I like my M9 for that. The metal casing really makes a difference. Just replaced the screen on my GF Sony Z5 compact - £100.

Samsung's always felt a bit flimsy in the past, although my S2 was surprisingly robust, just didn't feel it.

One thing I didn't mention is my M9 is a bit crap in sunlight, what's the S7 like?

You are really going to strugle! You need to stick with Vanilla Android.

I went from HTC One M8 GPE to Nexus 6p.

Wait for the Pixel 2 but it's going to be £££

The s7 doesn't feel flimsy, it's just all glass so a bit slippery. A decent cover is probably required - this is the first phone I've ever broken and I'm not any clumsier than I've always been.

If the sun ever comes out I'll let you know, but i don't recall any problems.
