I must admit to not knowing that 88 was a thing.
It's a tedious alt-right meme. The 8th letter of the alphabet is H, so 88 is / was a "clever" way of posting Heil Hitler while avoiding moderation.
The sort of thing that's screamingly funny and clever to 14 year old incels, like "420" for marijuana.

So Elon "Funny meme" Musk has announced the launch of the robotaxi
On the 8/8.
Hah fking hah Elon. He would know as well as his nazi-adjacent sycophants just what 88 is used to represent.
Anyone care to defend him? It could just be an inadvertent mistake, and he just happen to randomly pick a date that online Nazis use to represent Hitler. :rolleyes;

He's off the rails. How many times has the robotaxi been released now anyway?
Why does he keep releasing the same product over and over again but then, not actually release it?
The big deal about a robotaxi is the software, rather than the physical vehicle. So all we're going to see is yet another prototype. We've already seen the software and its not working properly yet, so nothing has actually changed, other than the shelving of the Model 2. And that shelving of the M2 is a big deal.
Robotaxi reveal is just a fancy dress party when you think about it critically. The software is the big deal, and it doesn't work right now.

I don't think there is much question he picked that date deliberately. I would imagine the reason is that he was high, and it was some 'very funny joke' i.e. the 'haters' constantly call him a racist, bigot, anti-semite etc etc so he decides to goad them to get a reaction by tweeting about 88. Most people won't notice, but he will have riled those who can't see they were the target of the 'joke' (and before anyone says otherwise, I don't think it's funny and I do think it's a foolish/childish thing for an adult to tweet about).Anyone care to defend him? Ah, so any announcement from Musk at all which has the date of the 8th of Aug is automatically Musk secretly referencing an inside meme where he's referring himself to being a "Nazi" and all of you claiming this is true know this to be 100% true without any leeway at all, its absolute fact?
You people are ****ing weird!
Get off the internet, get out your mothers basement and go drive your car (you're on PH FFS) and smell the outdoors. People like this are why we can't have nice things!

He almost certainly picked deliberately, not sure how often Tesla announce product reveals 4 months out - no necessarily to say Heil Hitler but it serves 2 purposes, one, it appeals to his inner edge lord and two, by it being discussed in multiple places people are now aware of an impending RoboTaxi reveal.

It might be a reach but given his history of promoting a very specific brand of racism, it's not a big reach. At all.You people are ****ing weird!

What "nice things" is Musk providing that this threatens?

This is the man who got in trouble SEC for saying he was going to take Tesla private 'at $420' so he could tweet the weed number. He cut corners at SpaceX so he could launch a rocket on April 20th for the same reason. He named his cars so the range spells 'S3XY'. He set the price of the Model S at $69,420 and was very pleased at being able to tweet that the Super Heavy booster was 69 metres tall.
Despite his blatant signal-boosting of right-wing scare stories and racist conspiracy theories, I don't think he's literally dogwhistling 'Heil Hitler'. But I do think he set that date so he could tweet '8/8' and smirk at how funny he thinks he's being, share a few cry-laugh emojis with Ian Miles Cheung and Chaya Raichik about how he's Triggered The Libs and create a buzz online about how Elon Musk said the Bad Number. Showing he knows the 'naughty signs' won't harm his standing with the alt-right crowd he's been orbiting increasingly close to, either.
Which is the one thing he's been consistently good at; decentralised online marketing from his own activity to create interest, hype and talk about him and his products. The delivery of the actual result is more of a struggle but it's the buzz that keeps his stock (literal and metaphorical) high.
There'll be a Heavy Haulage version of the Cybertruck next...rated to tow 8.8 tons.

He wasn't "promoting" racism; he was taking the piss out of the people who accuse him of that. Still, that doesn't make it funny. What "nice things" is Musk providing that this threatens?
As to whether the 8/8 was coincidental, had a quick search on Musk's previous tweets when he has announced events etc. From what I could see, he always has previously used the date format like Sep 20, March 15, Nov 21 etc. The only other time I could see him using a numeric month/day was a joke about SpaceX launching on 4/20.... So I think it is almost certain his "8/8" was an attempt at humour, and to trigger his 'haters'.

Given the perceived association of those numbers why would a global business ‘leader’ think that was appropriate? As to whether the 8/8 was coincidental, had a quick search on Musk's previous tweets when he has announced events etc. From what I could see, he always has previously used the date format like Sep 20, March 15, Nov 21 etc. The only other time I could see him using a numeric month/day was a joke about SpaceX launching on 4/20.... Is it because he really is a tt?
The 8/8 comment is quite on point. A very good video from Some More News about Elon's 'Hitler Problem' - https://youtu.be/xDyPSKLy5E4?si=s8SwrJP6_bjITY3_
