This is a direct intervention by Iran. Israel & Saudi are within inches of a peace deal brokered by the US, so sadly no surprise this is kicking off right now. However, I'm shocked at the scale of it. Surely GSS, Mossad & IDF intelligence should have seen this coming??
This is going to get VERY ugly - dozens reported dead already, reservist call up & Netanyahu already declaring war: https://www.ynetnews.com/article/rysg8i0l6#autopla...

One can only pray that things don't escalate out of all control......
100% this. Only Iran could have put something like this together. If I were a cynic, I'd say Iran are looking for a disproportionate Israeli response so that they can justify joining in.....

Again, what can they do to compromise on Israel wanting to eradicate them?

It’s a vicious war and both sides have done terrible things.
Have done, and are doing. Though launching a surprise invasion/war seems to be a popular pastime for some governments at the moment.

Is the timing significant, with Egypt getting caught up in a presidential election after a hard couple of years?

I think this is all good for Hamas, because their only 'selling point' with the people of Gaza is conflict with Israel. Escalating makes Hamas more important.

Civilians on both sides are in for a rough time, but it's civilians who support the god-bothering racist 'this is my homeland' bks on both sides.

It's been going on for a couple of thousand years, unlikely to conclude any time soon.

The best thing they could do is just say you know what, lets just live in peace. But as we have seen in Iraq, Northern Ireland, Africa, India, Pakistan etc etc etc religion gets in the way and people fight when in reality they could actually take history and throw it in the bin and start fresh but no one ever does this.

Humans are trash basically and we all look down on other countries thinking we are so much better....

Anyway, back to the task in hand.

To me this is a classic leave the door open trap. No way, and I mean no way they just walked in like that without at least a little bit of... this way lads...

The bigger issue is not the response locally, its if Iran gets dragged into it. Possible... IMHO.

Interesting to see how many Palestinian flags are on display at the Labour Party conference which starts tomorrow.
Starmer has already stated that Israel has the right to defend itself.

Someone wearing a Palestinian flag is no different than someone wearing a Ukrainian flag. Both occupied lands ….

No doubt their resident 5th columnists will be waving the flag, Starmer will be panicking given the recent past.

I am sure Layla Moran shares your sentiments but the Palestinians are about to feel alot more abandoned than they were yesterday.

If one civilisation chooses books, science, democracy and rule of law and the other chooses home made bombs , no amount of virtue signalling from Oxfordshire is going to fix it.

They’ve never needed one, it’s not like they’ve been sitting on their hands.

It’s odd to see people looking at a country in the midst of committing a genocide and say, what could they have done to incite this hate?

To be clear, in every instance that I’m talking about Israel, I’m referring to the regime.

I know not everyone in Israel agrees with what’s happening in Gaza.
Genocide?

Well I suppose not firing 5000 rockets at civilians, invading Israel, taking hostages and murdering innocent civilians might be a start

I'm not sure why you single out Layla Moran.

Very short sighted comparison. You may as well go on about the "Ukrainian regime oppressing Donbas". Of course the latter is purposefully missing wider context. Hamas is supported by Iran. And the fact is, Hamas have expressed genocidial intent repeatedly.

If Israel or Ukraine downed arms they'd cease to exist. If Palestinians downed arms, it would take time, but they'd get a state.

It's bubbling under for a while.

Relatively unreported but settlers have been rampaging through Palestinian towns on the regular recently, culminating in an incident 2 days ago where Jewish settlers ended up shooting and killing a Palestinian trying to protect his home.

No one supports attacks on Israeli's in the mainland but if you're an illegal settler you deserve everything coming to you.

Can't believe they managed to fly paramotors into Israel without being noticed / stopped.

That US money being put to use towards killing innocent Israelis. Who would have seen that coming?!

It's going to get very ugly out there over the next few days / weeks and a lot of innocent people are sadly going to get caught up in it.

Curious to see how the press reports on an open war where the US backs the occupier rather than the occupied.
You sound like a spokesperson for Hamas, it's not a good look.

It isn't a good look, supporting a despotic regime who steals Palestinian lands, builds illegal settlements, ignores UN treaties and keeps the Palestinian people in a virtual concentration camp.
More than 9,000 Palestinians have been injured by Israeli forces in the West Bank since the start of the 2022, according to the UN.

Israel invaded? Think about that.

Media advisory notes.
1. Hamas has launched an offensive out of Gaza because Palestinians are horrible people.
2. Everything has been just peachy in Gaza until this outrage.
3. Unlike Ukrainians, Palestinians are banned from resisting illegal occupation of their land.
Stand by.

A BBC article from just a couple of days ago:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-66751...

Undermining the legitimacy of the PA is its steady drift towards autocracy. Presidential elections brought Mahmoud Abbas to power for a four-year term in 2005, but now 87 years old, as the head of the PA and PLO, he continues to serve by his own decree overseeing an increasingly broken system.

The last parliamentary elections held in 2006 were won by Fatah's bitter rival, the Islamist party, Hamas, which is committed to the destruction of Israel. Efforts to form a unity government that the world could accept ultimately failed and in 2007, Hamas seized full control of Gaza, after days of deadly inter-factional fighting. It continues to rule there and the damaging internal political rift persists. Parliament remains suspended.
Dianna Buttu, Canadian-Palestinian lawyer and former PLO spokesperson

It's become a dictatorship and rule by those who are unelected, with no real connection to any political process

Diana Buttu
Former PLO spokesperson

While criticising the PA - even on social media - is increasingly risky, those who do speak out argue that today it has become preoccupied with its own survival and maintaining benefits for its leaders.

"It's the opposite of self-determination and self-government," complains Diana Buttu, a Palestinian-Canadian lawyer and former spokesperson for the PLO. "It's become a dictatorship and rule by those who are unelected, with no real connection to any political process."

Today, Palestinians aged under 35 have never voted in a general election. Ms Buttu and others call for new elections and a definitive push by world powers to force Israel out of occupied territory. However, foreign players seem unwilling to take bold steps.""
