The "narrative" that is being pushed is that it's only a problem in Democrat states ignoring that the pretty crime issue is national however the likes of Newsmax, Fox, et al, don't like mentioning that per capita its far worse in Florida, Alabama and other Republican states.
Interesting, can you provide a link to these Petty crime stats you reference here, please? But for everyone else, it took me a minute on Google.

NYC tops the total number because it's over 8 million people but when you look at the same figures adjusted per 100K pop, NYC doesn't even make it into the top 25.
It's like knife crime in the UK... London steals the headlines but you're more likely to be stabbed in Belfast. Not that you're likely to get stabbed in Belfast mind you.

Is because New York was rife with thefts as he claimed? Does that happen elsewhere?
https://slate.com/business/2022/11/cvs-walgreens-s...It's fairly rife in big cities. SF has huge problems.
Of course NYC and SF get mentioned because they're massive cities.
As a side note, having your pain killers out on a shelf is almost exclusively a first world thing. Most counties have all their medication behind the counter and you have to ask someone for it. Even just some Beechams equivalent that you'd just get at Tesco here.
Just a couple of weeks ago I was in downtown Sacramento for a show that I screwed up the time for. I was over an hour early! Doh. Anyway, didnt see a single homeless person while walking around. The streets were clean and I didnt feel threatened in any way. Now the morons with the Hemi's could sod off, but you get the picture.
My wife went to a very large shopping mall in the Bay Area the other week too. You know the place, one of those ones that did the rounds because it was "under attack from organized gangs doing mob-based theft" according to the media. Turns out that she didnt see a single crime while there. Well, except for the over priced meal at the snotty restaurant that no one liked - now that was a crime!
As for SF and closing stores - anyone been to SF and know where the 'high crime' areas are? So many news articles about the death of the city center, but the weird thing is that SF has a strange layout. Yes, there have been a bunch of closures there, the biggest one was the Westfield mall on Market - but to be honest, it has been on a downward spiral for over a decade, just like its escalators! Its never had a reasonable spread of stores and for the decade that I have been in and out of SF, it has never been full. Market st itself has never been a great street to visit for shopping too. I have had people comment that when Tower Records closed, it has never been the same, but that was back in 2005! Surprised that it is shifting? Absolutely not. Does it make a great story by the right-wing media to stick the boot in? Absolutely.
On the subject of CVS specifically, this is a weird one. Yes, SOME and certainly not all, stores do lock away SOME merchandise. My local CVS doesnt lock away anything! I would counter a different view though. CVS (and Walgreens too) usually have large footprint stores with relatively high value items that can be resold easily. They are usually staffed very thinly and operate with a skeleton staff, a lot of times without any security guard or loss prevention staff. Big store, high value small items and few staff - errrr, you see a picture here? Could they have created this situation for themselves? Is CVS (and others) suffering pressures in their sector from other competitors?
You get the picture. You can find crime if you want to. It is pretty easy. It makes a great news segment to highlight it, especially if it fits your political narrative.
I will admit that I do not live in SF and I am not there every week. But I do have a view as to what has been happening there for over a decade, and that doesnt match with the narrative from some in the media.
Homeless problem? Yes.. but no more or less than it has been for decades.

It is fair to say that Florida has a lower overall crime rate when compared with California, but the statistics dont quite tell the full story. Population density is significantly different and even small things like the number of retired people in Florida is something like 20%!!!
What is missed with this whole, "Democrat cities and states are failing and are just rife with crime", statements just arent true. I picked that link above to illustrate this because it has the historic data. Take a look at the charts that show the reduction in both violent and property crime over the last 30 years. Its a pretty dramatic drop. So this narrative that crime is rife just isnt true. Crime is down across a wide spread of states, some better than others, but other than a small up-tick in property crime from 2021 to 2022, its still massively down.
It fits the political narrative but doesnt fit the overall picture.

Sounds similar to a trip to the USSR I did years ago. The process was:It's fairly rife in big cities. SF has huge problems.
Go into a shop.
Queue at the counter before pointing at the desired item.
The lady behind the counter would write out a docket and hand it back.
Join the queue for the till.
Once the docket had been paid for and countersigned by the till person, go back to the original queue to pick up the item using the countersigned docket as evidence of payment.

OAN has issued a retraction and apology to Michael Cohen after falsely reporting he had a six-month affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels and the pair cooked up the story of trumps affair to extort money from trump
They are blaming Michael Avenatti, not their eagerness to push dirt for trump.

Nautas testimony is released, page 9, claimed he had Yankee white secirity clearance - the highest possible, but didn't know about SCIF's
Tesified there were still boxes remaining in trumps posession, clsims maybe 2 or 3 but he was filmed moving many around. Claims he wasn't moving around 50 boxes of documents. He was moving around 50 boxes of trumps hairspray and deodorant.

HuffPost on Comer and Jordons attempt to push dirt on Biden was just an extension of trumps extortion from Ukraine, and pushed the rhetoric trump tarted, to help trump.

trump was complaining the trial stopped him campaigning, or Melanias birthday. On his 3 days off this week, he played golf
He still has only 3 events on his schedule: rallies in Wisconsin and Michigan on Wednesday, now Judge Merchan moved the gag hearing to Thursday, and a rally in New Jersey on the 11th.

For as long as I can remember (been living in downtown Chicago getting on for 15 years), cities across the nation always had stuff locked up that are easy pickings for petit theft, primarily by the homeless/poor. Painkillers, cough/cold meds, razor blades, deodorant, etc. You want some, press the call button on the shelf and a staff member will come and unlock the cabinet for you. No big deal.
It’s not a Rep vs Dem issue, it affects all cities. It’s just the biggest and wealthiest cities are all Dem strongholds so the absolute numbers add up vs actual rates per 100k, playing right into the Rep news media narrative.
However once you’re away from the major city downtown areas (homeless/poor are not out in the suburbs), then it’s like anywhere else. No locked up products or anything.
I will say that it got much much worse during Covid and Trumps reign, but is now definitely getting better. Still a way to go to pre COVID/Trump conditions, but progress seems consistent. Just need to kick the “asylum seekers” into touch, as they’re now the buggers doing a lot of the pilfering.

Exactly. If you read some posts on PH you'd think that anyone that goes to London is taking their life in their hands but I work in central London and see more tourists than ever wandering about enjoying the sights.
I think perspective is very quickly lost with topics like this. I've mentioned Colombia on this thread, Brits will balk at how dangerous Colombia allegedly is but think nothing of visiting New Orleans, statistically speaking NOLA is more dangerous, but the perception of danger is higher with Colombia (Medellín and Bogota aren't even in the top 50 by murder rate).
When I go to Medellín, I tend to stay in the safer areas like Poblado, Lorales or Mile de Oro, I'm not heading out to the barrios where the murders tend to happen. Same if I were to go to New Orleans. OTOH, if you do stupid things in Medellín, even in the nicer areas then you're going to end up in trouble. Same can be said for London, Paris, Sydney or Tokyo (except that life is cheaper in the 3rd world, ours included).
