The skin colour you refer to is because it derived from overweight little Englanders whose gammon coloured cheeks grow increasingly red and purple as they raged about the latest headline in the Daily Mail. I know that calling it racist upsets people who want to say it (ironic... the people they are calling "gammon" also seem to get upset that they are not allowed to use racial slurs).
