To be fair, i remember using the "East London" line, until they started referring to them all as "The overground", which is when it all got confusing.

If anything, they should figure out a way to split the the names of the Elizabeth line branches. It's confusing when told there are delays, but it's just on the Abbey Wood stretch, for example. The Shenfield line was already a long and distinct line up to Liverpool St.

From memory it was the East London line when it was an offshoot of the Metropolitan Line, from Shoreditch to New Cross or New Cross Gate, and was part of the Underground. When that ceased and it became part of the Overground, it was just part of the Overground.
