Having advised Surrey Police on how to catch you guys, I applaud your thoroughness wink
I tried the same with cambs police, to say they were offended at the thought they didn't know everything would be an understatement.

Rusty Arches, why exactly do you wish he was malicious? Why do you wish he would have done real damage??
To teach you lot a lesson about having unsecured networks
So you support burglars rights to burgle. After all it teaches people to secure their houses.

People who act in a criminal manner are not victims.

If your stupid enough to hack secret agencies etc then you put yourself on offer.

Many other ways existed to show these weaknesses.

I was replying in jest frown

However if someone drops a note through the open window of a house, leaving it next to the 52" plasma TV, suggesting that they should take more care, should they be prosecuted for burglary?
But he didn't do that. After gaining access to a machine he root kitted the machine, eg altered so he could entry easily next time round regardless.

So, in your analogy, imagine a burglar entered your house, and left a note on the table suggesting you should take more care, but also changed the lock on the doors, bricked up the windows, and had stolen the deeds for the property. (essentially he now controls the computer).
Not doubting you for a second but the (few) reports I've read about this haven't mentioned rootkitting. Have you got a link?

I have less sympathy for him if that's the case but I still think up to 60 years in nick is a bit harsh.

It was reported quite early on that he was kitting machines as he went through them.

Thank god for the Tories wink

Personally, I wish the hacker was malicious. Shame it was someone that didn't do some real damage.
Just says May will look into it. Opposition are all in favour of opposing unequal laws when facing the government, but when they face the government will they will wish to upset Barack to end an unequal situation?
May admitted she has changed her mind over gay couples adopting last night, let's see how she moves on this. I think the Torys would be happy if McKinnion would just be quiet and be sent over to US like a good boy, but we shall see precious.

Given that someone like Sarah Palin can get into an election campaign speaks volumes about the sanity, or otherwise, of the septics.

I am utterly unable to understand the rabid hatred many of my countrymen have towards the yanks and their country. I appreciate it's a left-wing comedian's wet dream but there are much more unpleasant regimes you know.

We have little to be proud of here.

I think we do, also North Korea don't try and extradite our citizens every five minutes.

It's not an anti-american thing. It's the realisation that the UK/US extradition treaty is one sided. Under it, there is little or no prospect of a US citizen being sent here for the same offence.

True, but that was a visceral reaction to a situation, very poor but borne out of pressure. The Yanks have a jolly good 'think' about how they can fight their 'oppressors'

Sorry guys, it is an anti-American thing. I'm not just talking about this case, a hell of a lot of posts on this site betray nasty sentiments.

It's frankly embarrassing, God knows what the yank posters on here must think. Not everyone on here hates people just because of where they where born.

Except for the French obviously.

The average American has far more in common with the values of the European Continent than do a pretty sizeable minority of people living in any British city, it's just that the yanks are an easy target aren't they?

America has it's share of dumb fks and Palin is certainly one of them, but I'd rather align myself with them (you know, like in the two greatest wars in history when they stood and fell alongside us against tyranny) than just about any other country of influence on the planet.

Doesn't mean I like all of them but then I've met plenty of pretty foul English people in my time, like the ones we all complain about on here constantly.

I've followed the case pretty closely since it appeared in the news ages ago, and you saying he root kitted the machines is the first I have heard of it. Can you provide any news articles to back this up? I'm struggling to find any mention of rootkitting in articles describing his exploits.

Why would he rootkit boxes with no/default passwords?

Indeed.

All he had to do was install some remote access software like PC Anywhere and away he went. This is how IIRC he was caught, the software he installed on the open machines was purchased by him, and he was traced via that purchase.

Yep, here we go

http://www.linuxsecurity.com/content/view/112903/1...

No rootkitting needed, just installed remote access software, which was purchased using his GF's e-mail account.
