My understanding is that they are essentially being kept by the owners for their own private use / as a way to 'bank' the money.

Yep. One of the best ways to make money right now is just to buy London square footage and wait...

Couple of pics taken a few weeks ago on my phone:

I first posted this on here years ago. I'm finally seeing it from the View part tomorrow.
It's amazing how the area has changed with The Shard, The Place or whatever the Murdoch building is called, and the new London Bridge Station.

In fact incredible to see how it has changed since 1970, in that time the station has been rebuild twice and a tower block has been built where The Shard now is and demolished. https://twitter.com/NetworkRailLBG/status/73071507...
I was there in May and I thought about the picture I took and posted on here.

As you say, it's amazing how the whole are has changed. I was trying to place the old bits whilst stood at the foot of the Shard.

Terrific effort. Unfortunately, all my efforts on this and other threads have had their links broken, due to Photobucket's actions.

Have no fear, the quality of the pictures means they'll be hanging in a private collection somewhere.

The Gruniad is reporting that many apartments are still unsold. Worth a cheeky bid?

High living, low sales: Shard apartments still empty, five years on
From reading that article, they're happy to have sold none, lest they set a low price now as the benchmark. They're waiting for an upturn...
They are still under construction.

Yes, it is still an unfinished abomination, a blight on the landscape. I wonder how much cabbage changed hands to get the PP through for this thing.

I agree. As I said before, I reckon it will be gone, or radically changed, within 25 years.

22 Bishopsgate is looking quite interesting. It's had a tortured past (I believe it used to be the Pinnacle Tower, aka the Helter Skelter, before a market crash and a redesign), but it looks like it's going up quickly now.

When it was the helter skelter it at least had some design integrity. Now it's all three big blocks and all about maximised floorplates. Shame the number crunching turned it into that...

Quite amazing picture, of the first light of day bouncing off the Shard. Taken from the Air Traffic Control Tower at Heathrow:
