...so why no news of the what will be (for a short time) Europes tallest building. I am of course referring to the 'Shard of Glass' at London Bridge:

Building is now well underway in what promises to be the 1st of 14 new skyscrappers to be built in London that will transform the skyline into something resembling a US city.

And yet we hear absolutely zilch about it on TV or in the Media.

Pictures here of the building site taken on Saturday just gone:

You'd think we'd be a bit more 'proud' of the construction.

I like a good skyline. It's about time London got one.

I understand there were restrictions to the allowable heights of buildings in the 50's and 60's in the capital and that's why there isn't an impressive skyline such as you'd find in New York, for example.

With prime space becoming more rare in London hotspots the only way is up.

What an ugly mofo. Rotten location, too- there had been agreements to only allow this sort of crap within certain areas to keep the City's character a bit. Then, no doubt, a small suitcase full of money changed hands, and Bingo!

Brilliant.

With any luck, the Capital's comliest fillies will lose their minds, think it's an episode of Buck Rogers In The 25th Century and clad themselves in the garb of Erin Gray.

At which point, some chap like young Rico (although he may not be that young, these days) can pop out from behind which ever UAE plated Veyron he's loitering around for the day and stalk more traditional fare with his bulging lens.

I think the lack of publicity is due to the uncertain future of the building until very recently.

I believe it was originally approved years ago, then financing became an issue and now they're back to "full steam ahead".

Even so, it seems to be taking an age to get anywhere near visible construction started, they moved one of my mates (and the rest of his colleagues) out of the PWC building that used to stand on the site years ago and I think it was only finally pulled down recently.

The reason that there is no publicity is that there is nothing to see! A hole in the ground is hardly news worthy.

Of course its news worthy..."Construction has started on the largest building in Europe" kind of headlines I'd have thought...

yep, they were talking about this when I was working at PwC eight years ago, I guess it's not grabbing headlines because it's very old news.

Nope, we lived in a dumb-downed media driven news age - no pics = no story.

Nice. You should see the furore over the Beetham Tower in Manchester, and yet its a lovely looking building that makes Manchester look much nicer for its presence.

Erin Gray. Wow. Flashback to being a hormonal young teen. That was a memory from the rolodex of the mind that has not been accessed for a VERY long time.

Nice one DeR.

Back on topic - I am not sure I want the London skyline to look like Dubai, or some US city.

Am I the only one who thinks that all these Skyscrapers were just a wet dream from Ken Livingstone as he whipped himself up in some masturbatory frenzy about leaving a permanent mark on the city for everyone to remember him by?

No. That's pretty much the story of it's approval. There were objections due to it's location; it would not have been contentious at the Wharf, or even half a mile North by the gherkin...
