...so why no news of the what will be (for a short time) Europes tallest building. I am of course referring to the 'Shard of Glass' at London Bridge:

Building is now well underway in what promises to be the 1st of 14 new skyscrappers to be built in London that will transform the skyline into something resembling a US city.

And yet we hear absolutely zilch about it on TV or in the Media.

Pictures here of the building site taken on Saturday just gone:

You'd think we'd be a bit more 'proud' of the construction.
Are they those buildings that fight each other? wink
No skyscrappers are the toilets at Rupert Murdoch's TV company.

I like a good skyline. It's about time London got one.

I understand there were restrictions to the allowable heights of buildings in the 50's and 60's in the capital and that's why there isn't an impressive skyline such as you'd find in New York, for example.
London already has a good skyline, you just have to be in and around it to see it. I don't want our capital to look like New York, which was an entirely different prospect from the very start of that city. London is so much better without that crass looking shard dominating its skyline.

Who's going to lease the floor space? given the government intent on restraining the financial bods, the tax advantages of NOT basing a large company here etc etc is this just going to end up like most of twinkly buildings in Dubai . . . . . . . empty

Nice. You should see the furore over the Beetham Tower in Manchester, and yet its a lovely looking building that makes Manchester look much nicer for its presence.
You must be having a laugh, It looks like a 60's glass box. Each to there own I guess.

Has London got a protected skyline? I think that St Pauls has to be seen from certain sites, any know if this is true?

Had a friend vist from the US a few weeks back and she said London was one of the flatest cities she has ever seen, will be nice to have a bit of glass like NYC, far too many of Londons buildings are dirty stone, old and traditional maybe but most arent too pretty on the eyes.

I personally like that tower too, though Manchester could do with a few other 'Scrapers around it though as it does look lonely.

Well you only have to go up the Eiffel Tower and survey Paris and then onto the London Eye to realise how truly dire London looks by comparison. Both architecturally and aesthetically London is pretty bloody grim. With its characterless buildings which are mostly grey (and a dirty grey at that) when seen from above its certainly never going to win any beauty contests.

The new buildings, whilst not to everyones taste, will drag London into the new century and take your eye's focus of attention off the hotch-potch of unco-ordinated, dull and tasteless buildings that currently comprise London's skyline and hopefully display a more pleasing aspect.

It will never be an NYC or Paris but it just might develop a beauty of its own - and frankly not before time.

Many of these monuments to the ego of the architect and/or the politicians are considered eye-sores within their design life. You would hope we would learn from some of the worst mistakes of the past, such as all the dismal crap at Paternoster Square (beside St Pauls) that has only recently been replaced.

I agree with some posters here, London is one of the modern western world's first capitols and that makes it special. I hope care is taken not to bury your buildings, that are literal symbols of western society, in valleys of modern glass and steel. Placement and angle will mean everything.

You can 99.9% take it as money in the bank, that labour will fk it up.

Now its a recession, will it be known as the mosaic as a big glass shard is too expensive so they will have to use small bits of whatever they can find.

Also wont it be a bit late for labour MP's to jump off. Or are they saying labour are in for 4 more years.

Or they could move to home working via a secure private network and employees could live in Stoke on tent or Hope under Dinsmore or Telford or Tipon.

In fact they'd get the land free in Tipton !!

Although 1,017 feet tall (Canary Wharf is 773 feet and the Eiffel Tower is 1,063 feet tall although this includes the antenna at the top which is 79 feet), the Shard will still be a baby when compared with some overseas buildings.

The Barj Dubai is 2,684 feet tall and the propsed Saudi Arabian 'Mile High Tower' is actually over 5,250 feet tall.

Truly astonishing feats of engineering!

ETA:

There are currently 4 buildings under construction in London that are taller than Canary Wharf and 1 which is approx the same size. Another has been "approved" whilst 1 more is at the consultation stage.

On top of this there are 5 which are over 200m tall in production as well - Canary Wharf is 235m as a guide.
