You mean you produce something? Creating wealth from mere raw materials? Manufacture? Here in the UK? <faints>
I hope the authorities are aware of your crazy make-something-from-scratch idea. It'll never catch on anyway...
Not only that, but we can make stuff cheaper than the landed cost from China, and pay staff considerably more than minimum wage, who'd have thought it possible?
Are you the cushion bloke that was on TV a few months back? biggrin

We do the same thing, im an apprentice mechanical engineer in a well known tin making company. We've took on 3 apprentices and what not, we've found that it's cheaper to make all the tooling ourselves rather than rely on the chinese. I will admit the chinese stuff is amazing, but so is ours, we've only started to use them again as we have plenty of work on, not the best kind of work as we'd like bigger orders. I think things aren't as bad but they're not great.

No I'm not, so that must mean there's more than one company doing the seemingly impossible!

Though I suppose you could argue that increasing wages will allow people to service more low interest debt leaving you back at square one if debt remains cheap.
Well there were always two sides to the debt bubble; the feckless individuals and the irresponsible lenders, all watched over by a 'regulator' whose toothlessness was matched only by their gormlessness.
Well for those of us in countries with export based economies it's been very much "rinse and repeat" on house prices and debt.

Nope its going to get worse - Interest rates have to go up eventually (may be decades though)
As long as 'we' don't spend money economy won't get better.

All we need is more money . . . but hey, with houses and stuff depreciating and food / fuel / etc prices going up . . . ;(

I hate it when they manipulate the axes to exaggerate the trends.

That . . .

"Youth unemployment has hovered around the 1m mark since last year, despite Government initiatives such as the Work Programme and the Youth Contract, designed to get more young people into work."

I notice young - < 30 yrs - Brits coming to the Continent. Is that a trend or just my observation?

I have been thinking about my pension, and how likely it will be that it simply will not exist when I claim it. Is it better to save your own money, rather than pay, or waste hundreds per month on a pension that quite possibly won't be there, as the governments have already spent it all in the name of 'fairness'?

Why won't it be there? It's really no different to money in your bank.

TBH - I wouldn't at all be surprised if our government in the future raided our personal bank accounts to help pay for the enormous debts the country has - that has already been tried with one EU country. Am sure their tactics will become more subtle as they learn how to steal from their people better.

I worry because we have zero debt, not even a mortgage, no credit card debts too. We have learned to live within our means, but all around me I see people who have lower wages than me living a life way beyond their means still (not only huge mortgages for houses that are a little beyond their actual means, but brand new cars on credit, too!), fuelled by money they don't actually have. I am sure that the government and MSM will paint people like me as 'unfair', and the borrowers 'victims', such is the way of these strange times.

The UK is borrowing £85 Billion more than it takes in taxes. Something will have to give at some point. Thus far, all I see is people pretending that we can afford it and all's fine! I sometimes think I am on another planet to others.

What do you think has been happening for the last few years with QE and ZIRP? Your bank account has been, and is being, raided.

The government is spending around £85 billion more than it takes in taxes. (Nothing really to do with people buying new cars). Far from people pretending all is fine, what I hear are politicians talking about how bad the deficit is and blaming each other for it.

True..

That's why I have been saving up for my favourite straight six car - and will have saved enough by September. No point in leaving my hard earned in the bank at this time.

Yes it is the government spending £85 billion more than it should, but we still end up paying for it nonetheless, as the government still has to borrow that huge shortfall.

It seems that since Thatcher, the governments have acted like a Z-List celebrity gold digger wife, milking their prey for all they can get until there's nothing left.
