David Cameron/African Gays/Asylum Seekers
Discussion
It appears Dave is out courting the gay vote.

Nothing wrong with that if it is genuinely what you believe in but this is the same man who previously backed section 28 and was against gay marriage. Now that he wants to be PM, he is of course against s28 and pro gay marriage
As for the asylum issue - well you either believe we should accept those who are persecuted elsewhere into our country or you don't.
We are signatories to the UN convention relating to the status of refugees so Dave isn't really stating anything new here.
Our hands are tied on this issue.

What's wrong with that? Reasonable enough stance to take, surely.
Because every single African who turns up here will just say I'm gay and we will have to give them asylum. You still think its a good idea? We are full
Homosexuality is utterly illegal here in Nigeria, but that doesn't stop certain pubs and bars being full of outwardly gay people. Now Cameron is opening the flood-gates to them...
!
Every time Dave comes out with things like this, I cant help think that he's going to do the impossible and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory at the general election, unless this is his strategy?
Does he not realise that as a whole, the people of the UK are sick of this st and really would like a government who's primary concern is the people who they are elected to represent.

Our hands are not tied, afaik the agreement is that asylum must be claimed at the first country you get to - which is NEVER the UK as we are an island no-where near any trouble zone. From here the country governments can decide between themselves to re-distribute the people to other countries with their agreement.

One hopes a future Tory government would enforce this then and deport those who come here seeking asylum back to a 'safe' country which they passed through to get here.
Anyone know anything about the Common European Asylum System that we are part of? I bet this says something 'sharing our' asylum seekers. No doubt the UK got a great deal out of this

I agree with Skywalker, spend our tax money on dealing with internal problems first. If Cameron wants my vote he needs to sort out things that directly affect me, and unfortunately dealing with the persecution of homosexuals in Africa is not a priority and will not make my life better.
Even if we want to sort out the wrongs of the world surely he needs to be helping children first? Gay men have the choice to hide their sexuality or abstain from homosexual acts, it's not right that they should have to but they can make that choice. Children on the other hand have no choice when they are forced into slave labour and prostitution, to use examples.
I would argue that an impoverished child has more potential to contribute to our society (or say Indian society), when given help, than a persecuted or poor adult, because the negatives that adults bring with them are not yet ingrained and the child can be conditioned to value modern customs instead of tribal/medieval traditions that are at odds with the world today.

But, if they get to the UK and destroy their 'papers', it's "game over" unless something else confirms their identity or nationality. They're here to stay!
Not really, to get to the UK they must first get onto some form of transport in some other EU country. This means we can send them back to that EU country as we already know that they must have passed though that country.

Seems legitimate enough in principle. If you can claim asylum for religious or political persecution, then being gay in a country that would rather like to stone you seems equally as valid a reason for getting out of dodge.
Exactly... You can hardly say it isn't a valid reason for asylum... Of course how many gay africans will now suddenly come out of the closet is anyones guess.rypt said:
