worth a read if you fancy finding out why the airports have to close smile
What a fantastic article. The professionalism of the crew shines through.
Indeed, worrying though that aircraft got into trouble in the area even 19 days later. Can you imagine having to close UK air space for such a long time!

I can actually, and I care not a jot. Apparently the US skies became a fair bit clearer after the 11 September 2001 attacks. I'm interested to see what happens here.

When the dust comes down will it be dispersed, or is it likely to damage car engines?

Presumably air filters will stop it, but if everyone needed new filters simultaneously...

Norwegian satellite animation, takes a minute or two to load.
The massive grey patch is volcanic ash, there'll be nothing flying anytime soon.
Great link, TYVM!
I have a problem on my machine and that page won't load. What does the cloud look like? (i.e. width/lenght?)
fkin' huge.
I work in southampton, will the sky turn black today?
You're in Southampton...your whole world is black at present.

I don't understand the big deal, I know I wouldn't like to be running a jet engine through a load of dust as it is not just ash. So what if their is a delay.
From my (microlight) flying days...

It is far better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than it is to be in the air and praying you make it back to the ground.
Good point. Although I think it's a pretty fair assumption that you will end up on the ground eventually. One way or the other.

I'm meant to be flying to HK tomorrow night from Heathrow....

Have meetings planned from Sunday onwards in China. Bugger.

most parts of the UK are going to 'zero rate' which means that government/state flights and others with special permission are still allowed to use the airspace.
bounce Get Gordon and chums up there in a fully fuelled 747 and make him circle for a few days.

omg, there would be rioting on the streets, a national shortage of air filters!

I have to say this is all very exciting, that information about this volcano usually preceding a much bigger one is a bit worrying though!

seems like the icelandic colcanoes have been quite busy inthe last 6 months.

when the volcanoes under the ice sheets erupt it does some amazing damage - I have driven round the south coast of iceland and last time this happened I think large chucnks of their main road just got swept away in the floods. This volcano though is just under a glacier and not an icecap, I think, though I guess its still a lot of water.

You've all missed a trick here. The eruption is the combined emanations of Gordon Brown's Nokia-throwing rants, and Icelandic revenge over the banking crisis. Any minute now Ed Balls or someone similarly vacuous will be along to remind of of the importance of increasing emissions taxes to prevent this from happening again.

Oh, and the sprinkling on the top is that this will be a national emergency, to divert attention away from Gordon's failing election campaign biggrin
