Flights would be considerably cheaper if they weren't taxed so heavily to meet EU climate change targets. The reason flights used to be expensive was because politicians created government run airline cartels they wanted to protect. I can't see them making a comeback.
There's no tax on aviation fuel which I think is a joke considering the damage it does to the environment so I wouldn't moan too much about environmental levies tbh. Cars and planes
A nice idea... but a non-starter
It's not just passengers who reap the benefits of duty-free when flying - there is no tax on aviation fuel. So is the airport the place to fill up your family hatchback?
While motorists in Britain pay a princely sum for petrol, the great gas guzzlers that fill our skies get a much better deal.
Despite millions of litres of aviation fuel being burned in the skies every day, none of it is taxed, meaning the airlines are in an enviable position compared to motorists.
The great gas guzzlers of the skies.
Which at a stroke and for many years torpedoes all this worldwide emissions bovine excrement purveyed by the EU and their brainwashed minions as the way to go.!
Another real benefit of EU membership.

1) you do realise the vast majority of aviation fuel is Jet A-1 not petrol?
2) Avgas is not the same as Unleaded 95.
3) it's not that cheap:
From wycombe-air-park
AVGAS 100LL £1.67/litre
Unleaded UL 91 £1.89/litre
Jet A1 £0.82/litre
Fuel Prices effective 18th April 2015
AVGAS and UL91 includes VAT at 20%
Jet A1 includes VAT at 5%
4) if you put duty on aviation fuel, the airlines will just buy it somewhere else (it's called tankering), which is worse if you think about it as planes are then flying round with a lot of additional fuel onboard (and burning more due to extra weight).
Only way you could do this is if every country agreed to a common rate, and why the hell would you want to tax it anyway? put up the costs of airfreight why don't you?

Not seen much of him before. Andy Burnham is a massive isn't he?
Yep.Responsible for running the NHS while the Mid staffs thing was happening & on Gordon Brown's treasury team before that.
An utter of the highest proportions - I rather hope he wins the labour leadership, on those two issues alone he's unelectable

His point about political traps is funny coming from him being Labour as their 50p tax rate was exactly that, a political trap they set on leaving office.
Did anyone watch This Week afterwards? They had Jack Monroe on who is very odd. Didn't really answer any questions and only did when Andrew pushed her, then seem to claim that having kids with no way to pay for them is not an issue, and that somehow companies will all be able to afford the living wage.
Very strange.

I watched it. Very strange. POrtillo got ticked off with Brillo pad. Very strange.
Why is there so little fuss kicked up about Andy Burnham and his past failures, most notably the NHS Mid Staffs scandal?
I would be willing to bet everything that if the boot were on the other foot, and he was a Tory minister who messed up in such a way, the BBC would mention it every time his name was said!

I actually enjoyed QT this week, Dimbleby let the show run, and the audience got stuck in with some proper questions baring one or two. Evans put on a credible performance, surprised more was not made of the issue with Farage. Burnham was his usual evasive mascara self, Fraser Nelson is a decent commentator, the Guardian columnist was at least honest about his political preferences, which you may not agree with but can respect.
The conservative Environment minister seems to be an Anna Soubry type, strident but dim, lots of waffle but towing the party line to the death.
