No charges over G20 man's death

Ian Tomlinson collapsed shortly after the incident during the G20 protests in 2009
An officer who was filmed apparently pushing a man to the ground during the G20 protests will not face charges over his death.

Ian Tomlinson, 47, died minutes after being caught up in the clashes on 1 April 2009 in the City of London.

Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer said the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) concluded that "there was no realistic prospect of conviction".

The incident and its aftermath was caught on amateur video.

The officer, a member of the Metropolitan Police's territorial support group, is currently suspended.

Prosecutors criticised
Mr Tomlinson, a newspaper seller who was not involved in the protests, was walking home when he was caught up in the demonstration.

The video footage showed him being apparently struck by a baton and then pushed to the ground.

He was seen moving away after the incident but was found collapsed 100 metres away in Cornhill.

Lawyers have examined the video footage as well as CCTV images, photographs and witness statements.

Three post-mortem examinations were conducted on Mr Tomlinson's body leading to different conclusions.

The first found the father of nine died of natural causes, the second of internal bleeding and the results of the third, conducted on behalf of the officer, were not made public.

Following the death the Independent Police Complaints Commission completed their inquiry in August 2009 and handed a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

On the first anniversary of Mr Tomlinson's death his family and campaigners criticised the CPS for the delay in reaching a decision.

Hasn't this already been done to death, if you'll excuse the unintentional pun.

How? The decision has only just been made.

I think that is outrageous, that policeman is nothing more than a thug who knew he was going to get some good beatings that day so purposefully covered his badge and part of his face.

Utter scumbag, I hope he is fired anyway.

No charges are brought when a (female) copper beats up another (female) copper, so why should they be done for beating up a mere civilian.

Whatever happened to the copper who was arrested following the car crash that his copper missus was killed in? Somewhere near Manchester IIRC, her injuries were allegedly inconsistent with the crash.......? All gone a bit quiet it seems.

I wonder if the suspended copper is on full pay and if so when or if he will be back? I await his claim for compo due to all the "stress of it all" with interest!

It's probably a bit difficult for him to make too much noise, he's serving life for murder. It would've taken you about 15 seconds to find out on Google. At least make an effort!

Just watched this on the news, CPS drop charges as 'no realistic propsects of conviction' (or words to that effect).

How much evidence do they need? It seemed quiet clear he was assaulted by someone in a yellow jacket, whilst walking away with his hands in his pockets, he dies shortly after. WTF?

I agree. I don't think the guy should have been sauntering along in the middle of a protest who knows what he could have been up to.

It's not as if the copper beat him over the head ten times.

I say good on the police for once - people should have more respect and he should have got out of the way.
Agreed, he looked half cut and no doubt thought he was Bertrum Big Banana by walking slow with his hands in his pockets "he-he look at me being hard in front of the old bill wait till I get home and tell the boys how tough I am"......whoops

His children where on the London news this evening, showed pretty much the same sort of dis-regard and moronic attitude toward the police as their old man. Police don't just decide to pull on some riot gear for fun that should have served as his warning in the bloody first place.

The problem with forums is that you don't really know much about the person behind the keyboard, however believe me, I'm no left wing liberal commie pink guardianista, you get the idea.

AIUI this chap was pissed, and in the wrong place and wrong time, yet some of you seem to think this means the actions of the Police are acceptable.

Even listening to the news it seems the decision is less about the officers actions and more about a fked up autopsy.

Eh? Since when was sauntering with your hands in your pockets an offence? Whether you like his family or not, the video evidence seems fairly conclusive that a police officer shoved him to the ground for no reason that I cen see. That should at least justify an assault charge. Manslaughter, I'll agree, is a different kettle of fish.

Tomlinson wasn't beaten to death. I never expected charges, at least not on the basis of what we saw.

But how many times did the office ask him to move on, any rational person would think Coppers in full riot gear behind me asking to move on and there are riots in the capital, best just do as they ask.

Not saying they where faultless as you say the video evidence shows that but the coppers are dammed if they do dammed if they don't and the chap did nothing to help himself.

The officer will be charged with assault via normal police procedure I have no doubt

But they hot a guy who was already under investigation to do the post mortem. Why would you do that in such a public case? Perhaps to cause confusion & cast enough doubt to get the case dropped?
