Surprised it's not quicker to dig out the at the collapse location. There shouldn't be a shortage of tunnelling equipment down there!

Sitting in a cave for 4 months doesn't sound like fun but I'm reasonably sure being dead is definitely not fun.

Think if I was one of these guys I would be counting myself as lucky.

Day three in the Big Brother house smile

I all seriousness, this would be an ideal social experiment for NASA. They have people stuck together who somehow have cope. Ideal data for Mars missions.

This is nothing. They've still got to get to the other side without being killed by Orcs and they don't know it yet, but that Balrog is going to take care of Gandalf before they escape.

How big is the total area they are trapped in?
Surely they aren't confined to a 'flat sized' shelter? Surely there are some non-collapsed tunnels nearby to use as a 'bathroom'? I do hope there is enough space down there to seperate sleeping/bathroom. Poor guys. frown

Interesting experiment, at least. Could be a helpful case study for space exploration.

That many people in that small a place for that amount of time.

I read that they have about 1 mile of caves to st in, as well as their "refuge" area.
I don't understand how they have drilled down so quickly to send parcels to them but can't expand the hole to fit a cable / man down ?

Because drilling a hole is a hell of a lot quicker and easier than sinking a shaft.

I think the Russians are doing something similar right now:

Yeah, I've heard about that.
This could be useful though as they're not trained, they're in horrid conditions and there's many more of them.

It's too good a chance to let pass.

Bunch of people locked up together and slowly going mad with a camera pointing at them? Isn't there a series like that on C4?

This Yahoo news feed has a diagram of the mine and where the miners are. Now I am no expert but have all the zig zag tunnels collapsed hence the need to drill 700 metres down?

Must have I presume. Any mining experts here?
