Some interesting info on Yahoo news:

"Deep in the small mine, located near the northern city of Copiapo, there are deposits of water and ventilation shafts that helped the miners to survive.

The mine, however, is unstable, and rescue workers were forced to abandon attempts to dig past the main cave-in and down a ventilation shaft.

Rescuers plan to send narrow plastic tubes called "doves" down the bore-hole with food, hydration gels and communications equipment."

Anyone else think if it does take that long, they are unlikely to be bringing out all 33 alive? frown

Reminds me of the Uruguayan rugby team plane crash in the Andes. They made a film about that one.

I wonder if they'll make a film for this one...

The film is called Alive, fantastic cinematography in that film, particularly in their long yomp out of the Andes!

Not sure 4 months of troglodyte Chillians would work for a film? poor sods, I hope it works out in the end.

I had to laugh when I heard on the news that the miners requested some football shirts and a picture of Elvis!

Amazing video. I don't know why but I am fascinated by this story.
What must be going through these miners minds? Incredible fear, hope, and comradeship.

I read that a when the pilot hole is drilled the miners will have to clear the resulting rubble which will keep them busy. The next scary bit is when the larger hole is drilled and is nearing the miners, there is a risk of the tunnel collapsing again.

Would you want to go first up the escape hole?

Been down a few underground mines here in Western Australia as we consult for a few nickel miners.

After 30 minutes i couldnt wait to get back to the surface. It was farking hot, darkness like nothing else (i know this sounds obvious but imagine not one drop of light and not being able to see your hand when its literally touching your eyeball), limited air movement makes it heavy on the breathing and smells pretty bad.

God knows how these guys will get on in the conditions they are in.

Interesting fact anyway, the way they evacuate a mine now is by dropping a gas with a horribl odour down the emergency shaft to permeate the air so that all the miners know to leave. Its because sound and light warnings dont generally get noticed.

Lets hope so. They are sending medics down first.
Read a nice story on CNN today that the leader of the group of miners will probably come out last - kind of like a captain leaving a sinking ship.

As an seafarer i must admit the amount of horror expressed about them being trapped for 4 months is pretty hard to belive after doing 5 months on a supertanker which can easily spend 6 months without even tieing up to land and even if you do get to tie up it is unlikely you will be allowed off.

Mind you the company who ran the ship did send us some magazines
