I worked with several cricket mad Pakistani's who always swore their national team was crooked as anything and bribes were rife.

Seems they were spot on frown

The problem is that Pakistan has far too much influence in how International cricket is run. Darrell hair and the Pakistan ball tampering incident anyone.

It is interesting how the details of the Hair case are embellished and forgotten. He made an accusation of ball tampering that was found to be utterly unsubstantiated and not supported by evidence. He then offered to be paid off to go quietly. The actions of a , frankly. The Pakistan teams behaviour was not excusable that day but to claim Hair was somehow correct is also wrong.

As for this issue, its very sad, if its true. I thought this young team were free from this sort of thing and I am sure the details will be different to what the notw are reporting, but bans should follow.

What I don't get is why the crooks do it.

Crooked Punter to Player: "Here's 150 grand. Bowl a no-ball in the 4th ball of the 10th Over"

Crooked Player: "OK"

Crooked Punter to Bookie "I want to bet 15 grand that Player X will bowl a no-ball in the 4th ball of the 10th Over"

Bookie: "Oh yeah? Think I was born yesterday?"

But then I freely confess that I've never seen the need to place a bet or enter a bookies in all my 50 years on this planet, so I expect there's a sensible explanation.

My first guess is money.
My second guess is money.
My third and final guess, I am going to go with a curveball here, and say money.

yes Big on the subcontinent - they bet on anything and everything. From how many runs a player will score, to in which over/ball they will score the next 4/6 and will be out on.

its even creeping into football

the whole bet on when the next throw in will be when the last foul will be who will get the first yellow card

simple things in a game but if done properly people can fix them and get a decent income.

betfair are doing streaming of football games so you can have even more upto the moment bettin in place.

Sorry, I realised that - what I meant its that I would have thought it would be an easy scam for a bookie to spot. Naive little dog that I am, I hadn't thought of crooked bookies too.

So it's the naive punters who are betting on a rigged game that are the losers. Just goes to show that greed and stupidity are frequent bedfellows, I suppose.

Yes, but there are other players in their squad who have not represented their country and a large first class league with many players who would tear their arm off to play for their country. I think banning the entire country is reactionary and disproportionate particularly because we have no idea who was involved and what their level of involvement was. Indeed, we don't know what the motivations were. Remember, these bookies are not savoury characters and have used threats and intimidation in the past. If they told one of the players that they'd kidnap/kill his mum if he didn't bowl a no ball, would you blame him entirely?

Also I don't buy the fact that Cronje and Gibbs were on their own. To throw a match it requires the collusion of more than 3 players for sure.

Yep the PCB management, indeed the President are as bent as a £9 note. Certainly a big shake up is required with cricketers taking the reins of the PCB, not business men and other associated corrupt idiots. A big shake up is needed in the team and anyone associated with these allegations should suffer serious consequences.

The investigation will be fascinating as it might reveal corruption elsewhere within the game, in particular the IPL which is a hive of corruption. In a way it wouldn't be a bad idea if the Pakistan A team and U21 players were used to replace the current team until this investigation is complete. I hope it ends a few careers, particularly Akmal and Yousuf amongst others. The one bit of leniency i hope for is Mohammed Amir, who is basically a kid. I am pretty sure he has been led astray by the older team members. He should not escape punishment but not a life ban I hope.

No. He's already involved in populist politics. He's the only really credible future for the government in that country, given the corruption and incompetence of the 2 major parties.

He has been implicated in organising the fixing of the Sydney test. I hope Butt is finished too.
