I don't know if he's guilty or not however after watching the Panorama episode about this case I don't see how any decent judge or jury could convict him because there are so many holes in the testimonies of the prosecution witnesses.

After the first programme I was unsure after the second one I felt positive he didn't do it, everyone I know who saw it thinks the same. The guy from the group who said he didn't do it told exactly the same story as Dewani and they had no collaboration opportunity to get their stories straight. It's scandalous that all of those testifying against him have reduced sentences (or no sentences in the case of the 'fixer') and that the one who says he's innocent and didn't have anything to do with it has the longest sentence.

Whilst he may be innocent or not he went AWOL

I'm sure its impossible to know how someone would react if a spouse was murdered - however I would want to catch the bd either myself or with the police.

A lot of odd things happened from what the documentary showed some you have to question the chaps common sense and he appears to be a successful intelligent individual so we have some ? To answer.

If he is innocent clear the name if not MTFU and have some decency for his family

A lot of holes in both sides of the story. The spouse's family seem to think he had something to do with it (unhappy marriage etc.) so there is a possibly motive. We'll only hear his side of the story if he shows up in court. I don't think I could trust a TV documentary any more than the S.A. police.

If the Pistorius trial is anything to go by then Shrien Dewani should be on a plane home at the end of his trial. The burden of proof over there required by South African Judges seems very very high!!

I was going to ask this question in the South Africa subforum, but it seems very quiet in there so didnt bother.

But why in gods name would anyone 'choose' to live in South Africa?

Most of it is now on google streetview, and apart from a few small towns in the Western cape it looks like hell on earth. That is to say while it looks stunning naturally, peoples houses are, almost without exception, like prisons. It must be like going from safehouse to safehouse. From a secure office, to secure shopping malls, to secure homes. All artificial and built around security. Its like some kind of self imposed 24 hour lockdown.

No amount of money is worth that kind of life surely. Im not rich, but i like to go out for a walk everyday, often on my own, without fear of being attacked. Money cant buy that.
I spent a couple of months there in 05 travelling round: cape area, cederberg , drakensberg, nelspruit, Kruger etc.

Never had any trouble - but there are plenty of 'no go' areas especially after dark.

Countryside seemed safer than big towns.

Fantastic scenery / hiking etc - but would I want to live there ... Probably not . Dreadful economy and mismanagement by the ANC, and a lot of racist work policies and no respect for human life at all.

If u have a car crash - chances are u would be robbed, not helped.

Dewani isnt a South African Cultural Icon and sporting Hero though, is he? Might find it a bit more difficult.....

Also reported he has 'abnormally low hormone levels' ... Is that a PC press euphemism for 'can't get wood' with women?

Also recall reading somewhere his wife had concerns about his performance

If the defence do their jobs properly I don't imagine it will be difficult to discredit and pick holes into the testimony of the 'middle man' and the killers who I suspect, at the very least, are bending the truth a little for a reduced sentence. However the stuff about his private life is pretty black and white and now out there for all to see.

So now we potentially have a motive - she found out /maybe caught him trawling the classifieds and that was the big news she wanted to tell her Dad but she was too humiliated to tell anyone else/had to tell her father and mother first.

She confronted him - maybe he laughed it off but the game was up.

This or something along these lines that his very private life which would destroy his high standing in the Muslim community and his parents etc would be totally destroyed - maybe it could have ruined his business too.

Had the gay s&m stuff all been lies then what was he notice - now I'm struggling to not see how he didn't do it. Even if he didn't shameful crushing gay or any dating/swinging sites once married (heck engaged or even with a partner).

I think he's going down .... smile.
