Personally i think he is guilty. I have no doubt whatsoever. Has it been mentioned yet that the convicted killer who died a couple of weeks ago never changed his story. He knew for certain he had weeks to live yet he never gave a deathbed confession that his story was a pack of lies.

Unlike the Pistorius trial this guy is going to rot in an SA prison for 25 years.

You are correct in that he never changed his story however he was the only one who didn't implicate Dewani and he refused a plea bargain.

I thought they all maintain Dewani hired them. Is this not the case? Would you mind elaborating?

On the Panorama special The Honeymoon Murder Who Killed Anni Dewani? which aired late last year Jeremy Vine says 'Xolile Mngeni, the second gunman, now disabled by a brain tumour is the only one of those accused of killing Anni who has never implicated Shrien Dewani and has rejected a plea bargain'.

Interesting indeed-thanks all. My interpretation is that there is a high possibility that his not guilty plea has been bought by Dewani. Even though he was dying, his family would be looked after

Things do work in mysterious ways in Africa.

Some time ago I heard of a Westerner running over & killing a man in Malawi (or could be Zimbabwe). A suitable payment to the family meant things were resolved.

The elephant in the room is him leaving his new wife in an unfamiliar restaurant to get his phone. He just happened to leave his phone behind then makes a 5 min phone call to the man who murdered his wife. Keeps his wife waiting whilst he shoots the breeze with an SA taxi driver. Just hang him now!

He needs Judge Teasipa & Roux to defend him

would not be totally surprised in Malawi - have spent some time there ..wages are around $1-2 per day.

..doesnt take much for a 'life enhancing sum'for the family .. individual lifetime earnings would be what - typically $10 - 20k max for a non professional outside of Lilongwe or Blantyre

Has anyone read whether the two killers wore masks or any kind of disguises? I ask because if they did not (as I suspect) it would seem inconceivable that they would allow Dewani to walk away without a mark on him. It would also be interesting to know whether he left his phone at the hotel but on previous excursions, took it with him. Same with watch/wallet etc.

A South African legal expert has said that Shrien Dewani could be cleared as the two 'star' state witnesses had been particularly "poor" and his legal team had a "more than reasonable" chance of having all charges against him dropped.

Leading defence attorney William Booth spoke yesterday about how the state's case against the British millionaire was "riddled with inconsistencies" and could collapse before Dewani has to take the stand.

Mr Booth said: "The two key witnesses - Tongo and Qwabe - have brought really the only testimony that counts in this trial and the quality of their evidence has been poor and riddled with inconsistencies.

"The overall quality of the prosecution case we have heard so far has not been high. There is nothing for the defence team to lose by bringing the application to have the case against their client discharged and I think they would have a strong reasons for doing so. If Dewani were my client, I would certainly go down that route."

Your average South African burglar or hijacker has scant regard for the country's legal system or its ability to bring criminals to justice. The use of balaclavas therefore aren't really in vogue in criminal circles any more.

Either the two are liars and making all of this up for a reduced sentence or they are idiots (it's pretty moronic to accept such a meager amount of money, to carry out a killing, from a random tourist you've just met).

Whichever it is it looks like Dewani's legal team are running rings round Tongo and Qwabe.

bbc said:
A taxi driver, convicted of murdering Shrien Dewani's wife Anni, did not ask when he would be paid for his part in the fatal shooting, a South African court has heard.

Zola Tongo, who is serving an 18-year prison sentence, was asked what arrangements he had allegedly made for payment with the British businessman.
bbc said:
Tongo said he could not remember discussing how he would be paid, which Mr Van Zyl said he found strange, as Tongo had described the payment as important.

After more questions, it was revealed Tongo did not ask about the alleged commission when he and Mr Dewani were sitting together at the Cape Grace Hotel, hours before Anni's body was found. Tongo said he did not ask because the hotel was busy.

Shrien's lawyer has said he will bring a witness to testify that Tongo confessed in prison that Anni was shot accidentally. Tongo allegedly told a fellow prisoner that he, Qwabe and Mngeni had planned to hold Anni hostage and blackmail Shrien for a ransom, but when one of the kidnappers wanted to rape her, a row broke out and she was shot.

except the ransom concept is even more far fetched. Mind you, if he gets off, his life in the UK won't be worth living.

No, but you have about a 50:50 chance of finding one who will do it when you ask.

And to prove the point, here's footage in today's news of police being robbed and locked in their own van in broad daylight.
