The Army were "offered" to help, but since it wasn't a Major incident as defined under the Civil Contingencies Act, they don't come free. BAA would have had to pay for the use of Military assistance under the different sections of MACA - Military Aid to Civilian Authorities.

I never knew sitting in on LRF meetings would impart some knowledge.

Seeing as how they struggled to get two runways clear it's probably a good job they didn't have a third to do as well.

Ha!

The £1m a year clown in a fluorescent jacket (that’s Mr Colin Matthews, CEO of BAA) has just been on TV saying he’s responsible for the chaos at Heathrow and won’t be taking his bonus for 2010!!

What a star he is…..

The weather has been in charge of Heathrow for a while, will it get a pro-rata share of the foregone bonus? If so I'll look after it on behalf of weather everywhere and put it to very good use.

You should put in for his job. Then next time the weather is this bad, you will be the clown.

I am familiar with your work. Why don't you just blame the McCann family for the snow and leave it at that?

Have you noticed how the recently sold off Gatwick is dealing with it a whole lot better, more investment etc etc
This week Gatwick is flying, Heathrow isn't, the other week, Heathrow was flying Gatwick wasn't, so dont think your comment is relevant really.

In the cold war how did the brits keep the runways clear of snow for the Vulcans?

Now that's a very fine question!

Let's just hope no-one puts Matthews in charge of UK's strategic air defence.... After all, if he's never previously spent more than 2 years in a job it must be time for a change!

I'm guessing he didn't get the job because he was good with a snow shovel. In any case, his job is to run the place as best he can within the budget constraints set by others, and if that budget doesn't include weather proofing to your requirements, then there are going to be some hold ups. I hope yours didn't inconvenience you too much.

I remember seeing a film of a jet engine strapped to a flat bed clearing a UK runway. Military I think not civilian.

Factor in how many days each one was closed for and try again

Gatwick is 40 odd miles from Heathrow, so the weather conditions affecting each might well be different.

Gatwick's snow was every bit as difficult as Heathrow. It seems Gatwick did splash out and buy some stuff after the first snow hit - which allowed them to cope better with the second hit.

Did they, Gatwick, deal with it very well about two weeks back? I don't think so, albeit a lot more snow, but then only a single runway operation.

They've put a lot of effort in after that fiasco admittedly.

By the way did I mention that LHR had only 4 inches to clear?

I wander if they are faster forwards or backwards?

You know for certain that someone has tried

If you were given a truck with a jet engine strapped to the front you would try you know you would
