Experts saying an air to air con-trail was seen heading towards the Su-24, and the only missile that does this is the AIM-9 Sidewinder, which the Turkish F16s still carry.

Russia has been bombing the fk out of Turkmen villages in Northern Syria, apparently.

Turkey has warned Russia about this, so tensions would already have been high.

If Turkmen hold one of the pilots, mmmmm......

Turkey also has been dropping bundles of love on the PKK in Northern Syria, I guess they are the only ones allowed to bomb, if it helps Edrogen to get re-elected and his son's oil company to accept ISIS oil of course.

Turkish radar tracking - not sure what it's supposed to show:

Apparently one pilot captured by Turkmen forces, one pilot dead.

No expertise but it appears to show the Turkey-Syria border near the Mediterranean. I assume the plane was downed in the yellow box and the red line is it's path up to then?

If so it's a pretty tame violation of Turkish airspace. From Google maps that is wooded mountain area with no population or bases. Although he does appear to have looped around and done it twice. I wonder if they've been goading the Turkish a bit when warned not to?

But it might be better to wait for someone who knows what the hell they're talking about?

This is not the first time in recent months that Russia has tested the response time of the TAF.

They were warned ten times this time round before having their return ticket cancelled.

Putin's not the only one who can flex political muscles and I'm no fan of pasha Erdogan.

Those pilots knew exactly what they were doing as they do when testing UK defenses over the north Atlantic.

Russia Today are fixed on blaming the rebels. A nice way of keeping the pressure low in public...

(and in private...?)

Seems a bit harsh to shoot it down, I was expecting a massive incursion into Turkish airspace, not just crossing a section which may not follow a land feature and so may not be that obvious from the air?

That must be the slowest Su-24 in history, if the Turkish jets were warning it for 10 minutes in Turkish airspace before shooting, based on those tracks. The Russians are saying it never went into Turkish airspace. Let's hope they stick with the ground fire story.

It does seem harsh, but Russia routinely takes the piss.

It's air force is constantly throwing it's weight around all over the shop - it's time it grew up. It was only a matter of time before something snapped.

Might do some good, and put an end to the childish provocative flights around our coastlines.

While I think it's significantly likely that Russia makes things up, I'm not sure why you think the US is much less likely to?
Just recent history: We had fk all to do with Litvinenko being poisoned; There are no Russian troops in Crimea; There aren't any in Eastern Ukraine either; Oh, those troops were lost; That Malaysian airliner was shot down by the Ukrainian AF, look here's a picture; We are in Syria only to fight ISIS.....

And it looks like they're now saying that rebels shot the Su24 down, not Turkish F16s - after Turkey admitted it!

Turkey has moved it "airspace" 5 km into Syrian territory since 2012. Seems Turkey now includes part of Syria as it airspace.

They also seem quite happy to bomb the "bad" Turkmen at will in Syria.

Let them stick with that story, it de-escalates the situation.

US is attacking IS oil revenues. They've just announced they destroyed 280 oil tankers in ONE raid.

Let's see which nations are stupid enough to declare they have a fuel shortage in the coming months.

Only now? they have only been bombing in Syria for almost 2 years ! Perhaps Erdogen and son needed the money or they could not find the 10 kilometer long oil tanker convoys on satellite. Sounds legit.

Anyone in the know able to confirm if my amateur guessing was right? I would guess the 10 minutes was between when they first crossed into Turkish airspace and then looped around for a second bite?

Deliberate wind up?

Maybe or the aircrew could have been distracted by something on the ground/air and lost awareness of their actual position for just a few minutes. Could be lots of things.
