Turkey has started an invasion of Syria, along with support from Saudi. The brinkmanship goes even closer to the edge.

you just have to wonder WTF the Turks are playing at? Shoot down a Russian plane, now try and invade Russia's ally... all the while being a member of Nato with the potential ststorm that that'll bring!

If the Russian aircraft was in Turkish airspace, kudos to them I reckon. Russia is getting equally reckless and their economy is in basketcase zone.

it probably was but they didn't prove it and it was shot and fell in syrian territory, you don't have the right to shoot other planes when they get out of your airspace

The difference is the reaction to the incursion, say comparing Israel and Turkey. Israel (who are not known for their forgiving attitude to airspace incursions), warn the Russian plane, and plane leaves, no sabre rattling or over reaction. Turkey, just happens to have fighters in the right place, at the right time, no easy feat, supposedly warns Russian aircraft but that is disputed, shoots down a Russian plane, for a 17 second incursion into their airspace. A Graham Norton level of overreaction.

Similarly if the Greeks reacted the way Turkey did to incursions, a full blown war between NATO countries would result.

Turkey are the nasty sort of little nation that wants to provoke war to keep it's position strong. No-one in the West will ever say to Turkey, self-determination of peoples. biggrin

I can only imagine the outrage in the Western mainstream press had the Russians shot down a Turkish jet.

I would be better if we didn't find out for real.

Corbyn would be readying his fleet of nuclear warhead-less nuclear submarines as a show of strength.

Time for a re-cap? I'm confused...

Syria/Assad is fighting a civil war against multiple groups, amongst which there are ISIL elements (one of the larger?) and Kurds, plus numerous others...

Russia is Assad's main ally? They have a military base in Syria giving access to the Med and have been friends of Assad for decades.

The Turks are happy to see Syria dissolved? Anything really as long as the Kurds get a pasting? But in the meantime Turkey is happy to pass through x millions of refugees onto Europe whilst presumably making tonnes of cash from trafficking, when not selling ISIL oil onto the market or charging for goods heading for Syria.

The USA and UK back 'moderate' rebels...but also sometimes the Kurds. Who also may be moderate, unless they're not.

Iran backs Hezbollah and provides manpower to back Assad.

KSA might be funding ISIL, or indeed USA might be too, as long as ISIL fights Assad (and Russia).

The millions of disposessed would rather live at home, but for now they are leaving for points West.

What have I missed?

Sunnis and Shias st again. And the West makes money out of it all, so keeps the fight going. Also divide and conquer the Islamic threat.

Good for the arms industry.

Saudi Arabia want an oil/gas pipeline to go through Syria to directly supply Europe, Russia desperately do not want this with Europe being their biggest customer and this will not happen while Assad remains in power.

SA and some other countries who will benefit from this are supplying and training 'moderate' rebels with everything they need, Russia are doing everything it can to wipe out any rebel force
