With the creation and backing of friendly and peaceful groups like Hamas and Hezbollah why do you think Iran will bring stability to the region,?

Phil
The important fact is control of those groups, If Iran has them on a leash, then that is a good thing, if we can deal with them. It is a question of how to control the crazies, Be that Hezbollah or ISIS. Iran has been out in the cold for a long time, perhaps a less frosty relationship can actually help the situation.

Handing them huge influence in Iraq by imploding Iraq, may not have been such a smart strategic move, thanks Bush and Blair. A balance of power in the region is preferable. Iran has been willing to deal before and there will not be any relative peace without them in the equation. We have put our eggs only in the Saudi / Sunni basket, and that has not been a great idea.

Well, this is an interesting development in Syria. Now, cut the arms supplies by "allies" to the "moderately Islamic Fundamentalists" like Al Nusra, FSA, ISIS, love and harmony by beheading, or whatever name they have chosen this week and progress may just happen.

Big push happening in Aleppo, let us hope Trump keeps the neo cons out of his cabinet, but talking about characters like John Bolton is not a good start.

Article in yesterday's Times ramping up the threat of Turkey backed rebels taking on US backed Kurds up near the Turkish border.

The Turks have provided tanks, personnel etc and clearly have an agenda when it comes to Kurds...the article also comments on a possible all out war (just what we need) between Syria and Turkey. Yay!

If US backs the Kurds, Putin is backing Assad, Erdogan gets Iranian help who do we bomb (no doubt our political class will be hot to trot once more)?

I doubt Erdogan will get assistance from Iran, Hezbollah and Iranian troops on the ground already.Syrian army bumping into Turkish forces or Turkish backed Kurds is a distinct possibility though. Turkey is more likely to side with the Sunnis, Saudi and Co. Considering the existing relationship. Iraq and Turkey are likely to have a vigorous chat, once ISIS is dealt with.

I am not sure Erdogan will want to poke the bear again, quite so soon, after the last confrontation and fallout.

first this ..

The Turkish Armed Forces delivered artillery strikes on Syrian government forces positions in the town of Nawara in the province of Latakia on November 23.

then this

Ankara said it will retaliate after three of its soldiers were killed in a suspected air strike by the Syrian Air Force in the province of Aleppo.

The attack occurred last night during a Turkey-backed militants operation in northern Syria, the Turkish military said in a statement. 10 other soldiers were wounded in the air strike that it “assessed to have been carried out by Syrian regime forces”. No details about the location of air strike have been provided.

and now..this

The Syrian army and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) launched a joint military operation against the ISIS terrorist group east of Aleppo city on November 24.

The joint forces reportedly liberated at least 2 villages in the area: Sheikh Kife and Nirbeh.

Pro-government sources also argue that they liberated Juba and Halisah, but they had alredy been in the hands of YPG.

Clashes between pro-government force and ISIS were also reported near Tal Shair.

The joint advance of Syrian government and YPG forces took place following the recent escalations between them and Turkish-led forces across Syria.
7 other Turkish soldiers were wounded in Syria later on Thursday, Turkish Dogan news agency said. There is no information who is responsible for the second attack.

Current escalations between Turkey and the Syrian government and between Turkey and Kurdish YPG forces in northern Syria took place over the key Syrian town of al-Bab that is currently under control of ISIS.#

BREAKING: Syrian army and Russia are now attacking the Turkish army in an on-going, escalating conflict in northern Syria. Missiles launched... not confirmed.

Erdogan sees an opportunity to flex his muscles and make a play for Kurdish regions in Syria (as many have already highlighted), the big question now is how this will tilt the balance of Turkish-Russian relations which, in my view, are not as strong as some would like to believe. Should the Turk-Russia situation deteriorate it has the potential to really kick-off.

It seems to be turning into the quagmire many people over here have been predicting for a few years.

Egypt has allegedly sent some 18 helicopter pilots to the Hama Airbase. These pilots are set to participate in joint Egyptian-Syrian operations against terrorists.

There are reportedly four senior Egyptian military figures already in Syria. Two Egyptian Major Generals have been reportedly operating at the Syrian Armed Forces Staff Headquarters in Damascus and touring various fronts since they arrived the country month ago.

Earlier this week, the Lebanon-based As-Safir newspaper reported that Egyptian warplanes had landed the Hama Airbase for the first time. The newspaper claimed that jets were set to participate in operations against ISIS.

The Turkish military camp in the village of Azraq in the Syrian province of Aleppo allegedly targeted by the Syrian Air Force on November 25. At least 1 battle tank was damaged. Casualties among Turkish military personnel were also reported.

Kenan Rahmani, a policy advisor for the so-called “Syrian Campaign” was one of pro-militant sources reported the incident.

The Egyptian involvement is an interesting development for the region, as Egypt traditionally has aligned with the Saudis, but have been having a disagreement of late, which has been escalating.

This mess has drawn in the entire region, let's hope it stays contained, I suspect the architects of this mess now realise they have lost control of it.

Northern part of the East Aleppo pocket has collapsed - Not a good day to be a jihadi smile

http://www.mediafire.com/convkey/1872/etrbvqodi8h1...

Not sure how closely people have been following the Aleppo fighting but 24 hours ago Tiger Forces were still grinding their way through Hanao Housing and SAA/Hez appeared to have barely made a dent in Jabal Badru. Now the whole northern part of East Aleppo pocket has been sliced off with any 'rebels' who didn't retreat south basically fu<ked due to the Kurds breaking out of Sheikh Maqsood to cut them off.

Haven't seen the map change so quickly in years. Will be interesting to see whether the remaining jihadis fight to the end or take the green buses to Idlib. Either way I hope the unfortunate citizens of Aleppo can get some peace soon.
