I agree.

He no longer has any say in the matter - did he ever being nothing much more in recent years than an Iranian mouthpiece, much like the Iraqi leader.

I still cannot get my head around why Bush put a shia leader in charge of Iraq.

Did he think that would help bring peace in the region rolleyes

Turkey will become the big player now. They have used the anti-IS umbrella to launch a concerted attack on the Kurds. They aren't even hiding the fact they gave intell to the Al Qaida allied Nusra front, which enabled them to attack the 'moderate' rebels trained band equipped by the USA. The Nusra front are an ally of Turkish President Erdogan, a man so corrupt, he's now planning to re-run the recent elections until he gets a majority. He's a dictator in the mould of all other Middle Eastern Dictators and until somebody stands up and stops him, it's going to become an even bigger mess.

Things just got interesting in Syria.

Russia has stepped in on the Assad side with an expeditionary force. This has potential to blow up in a big way, with Russian and US / Turkish planes all in the same airspace.

Good, the west reducing the Syrian army to be even in fight strength to the terrorists was a huge mistake, even more so now that Islamic state are gaining in strength and territory. I know Putin is ultimately looking out for Russian interest here but there is real danger of all of Syria and Iraq being Islamic state controlled which is a huge threat to the world

Virtually impossible to do so, I'd imagine, certainly not without incurring massive "collateral" damage.

It would also require what the coalition did in Fallujah in GW2, which would also require significant boots on the ground - which there's no appetite for.

No-one is gonna go in big time until it get's to the point where they think ISIS is uncontainable.

Germany should be given the opportunity, will not need to care for the 800k migrants (unless of course it anted them all along to boost its working population numbers).

The escalation in Syria begins.

The USA wants Greece to close its airspace to Russian flights to Syria.

France prepares to get in on the action, remind anyone of the Libyan explosive anti-bad guy, explosive democratic success?

The pièce de résistance of middle East comedy lines, White House Confirms Russian Presence In Syria, warns it is "Destabilizing"

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-09-03/flashpoin...

We now have nuclear armed opponents facing off in Syria, supporting and / or attacking various nebulous armed groups, Russia putting troops and hardware on the ground, Turkey kicking off a war with the PKK both internally and in Syria, USA bombing their current enemies / friends / someone looking Middle Eastern, Qatar & Saudi pushing arms & "training of moderate Islamists" into the region, Iran has troops on the ground, Hezbollah and not to mention Cameron acting in "self defence" against UK citizens in Syria.

Syria is beginning to look like a feeding frenzy.

It seem Erdogan has got the effect he was looking for by attacking the PKK, preparation for the snap election.

As Europe deepens its involvement, Russia appears to be increasing its military role in Syria. U.S. military officials said Tuesday that Russia has sent in new planes, personnel and equipment in what appears to be an effort to set up a new air hub on the Syrian coast.

American officials are concerned the Russian buildup is an attempt by Moscow to provide more air support for embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, but Moscow’s intentions aren’t yet clear. The moves by Moscow could increase the risk that members of the U.S.-led coalition could face off against Russian jets in the skies above Syria.

Heh. As if things weren't transparent enough already. "Do not assist Assad against IS & Co., or we will attack you."

Frustrating how not much appears to be done about confirmation that Isis have been using chemical weapons compared to the out cry about asad being suspected of it.

It's confirmed by the US government, yet first reports were back in March from an attack in January. It seems some what quite under reported, especially the significance of ISIS producing and using chemical weapons.

It's possible that few if anyone gets close enough to IS and lives to tell the truth about any CW use.

While there is a lot more video footage, both before and after Assad's CW's were destroyed and or taken for disposal by the International investigators. That is other than Chlorine based gas which he argued had other industrial uses and so was allowed to keep +, any other gasses he did not declare at the time.

Personally, I think the same chemicals have been tooing and froing between Iraq (during Sadaam's time) and Syria basically hiding some stock from inspectors.

Of course, I could be wrong.

Assad is not looking quite that bad now, compared to the other options.
