Meanwhile, In Syria
Discussion
Large convoy arrived in the central Syrian city of Hama Monday from Latakia.
– Russian personnel accompanied by a convoy of equipment have
reportedly deployed to Hama in the latest sign of Moscow’s growing
military buildup in Syria.
A Syrian newspaper close to the regime reported
the convoy had transported Russian food and relief aid, while
anti-Damascus outlets said Russian military officers and equipment had
been sent into Hama.
An activist from Hama said he had received
“information about the arrival of a delegation consisting of Russian
officers and experts accompanied by the [Syrian] Defense Minister Fahd
Jassem al-Freij [Monday] at Hama’s Al-Nawair Hotel.”
If Russia does send troops in I feel Putin will fall into the same trap they did in Afghanistan, getting bogged down, losing many men and with too many body-bags being sent home. Unlike Afghanistan where you basically had one foe albeit backed by the west here in Syria there are multiple players and it will become far worse.
Whether he is playing politics I don't know however I think the odds at Paddy Power for Putin's propping up of Assad and coming out unscathed are distinctly in my favor.
He will live to regret he ever got involved.
Ah, I forgot, Putin doesn't do regret.

So what are your thoughts for Putin sending in special op's troops and armour but stating it's humanitarian aid?Phil
He isn't saying it is humanitarian aid, he's quite clear that it is military.

It is quite funny, when the evil monster dictator oligarch Putin is doing more to bring peace to Syria than the rest of the western world combined.
If the world was so concerned about the death of one child, why are they supporting the terrorists in Syria killing thousands? Fair question Mr Assad.

What they haven't stated is that they're for open ended contracts with a pay us when you can clause.Oh, and I'd like to extend the lease on that naval base.

Putin resolved the chemical weapon issue without resorting to violence, while the western world was voraciously intent on "explosive freedom and democratic" bombing. You must remember the barrage of "we must bomb now " Team America style coverage in the media, with William Hague and Cameron falling over themselves to convince the UK it is the right thing to do.
The narrative was never about the chemical weapons, that was the convenient excuse, much like the "9/11 Al-Qaeda connection and 45 minute WMD" claim for Saddam or the "saving a massacre in Benghazi" claim in Libya. Are we all noticing a trend here ?
Putin is now supporting the recognised government of Syria to fight a violent and externally funded, armed and trained terrorist organisation/s, that make the IRA look like rank amateurs.
Putin maybe a dictator, oligarch, bond evil genius, stone faced, pantomime strongman but his record in Syria is certainly better for the Syrian people, than his fellow world leaders.

Let's bring peace to Syria, by arming and training terrorists to fight the government and other terrorists, who are indistinguishable from our terrorists.
Peace in our time. No wonder Obama got the Nobel prize for (lack of) peace.
Monty Python could not even pull off this ridiculous situation.

What, the ones there still using?"Now that Moscow has officially confirmed that Russian boots are on the ground at Latakia and that the Kremlin is actively ramping up its technical and logistical support for the Assad regime, one point we've been keen to drive home is that rebels, "freedom fighters", and marauding, black flag-waving jihadists alike will now have a much tougher time routing government forces and taking control of the country.
After all, battling Assad's depleted army (which is effectively fighting a three-front war with limited resources) is one thing, but fighting Russian special forces is entirely another, which is of course why the US is so "concerned" about the Russian presence in Syria. Put simply: if the Kremlin doesn't want Assad to fall, then Assad will probably not fall if the only challenge comes from various ragtag militias and Islamic militant groups. That calculus obviously changes if the challenge suddenly comes from a US-backed coalition consisting of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, France, Britain, Jordan, and Qatar.
It's with that in mind that we go to Reuters, who reports that the Russians may have breathed new life into Assad's forces which have reportedly begun using new weaponry and launching offensive strikes on Raqqa (the de facto ISIS capital)."
