London Protests (riot) this weekend....
Discussion
Supposed to be a mahooosive protest this weekend in London, 4000 police and a lot more protestors, news was touting it as more attendees than the Iraq war protests which I thought was around 1m people!!
With all the current unrest around the world, budget today and another counrty invaded over the last week, whos putting money on this being the riot of all riots?
If it does turn into a rampage riot fest then it loses all credibility of being a protest and everybody that see the reports will not support them.
Protesting is one thing but mindless criminal damage to buisness and property is another.
Just a Q.
If a protester was caught doing vandalism would the uni or college take any action against them?? Example suspend or expel or fine?

If their involved in series criminal activity it might do yes. Protesting is one thing but mindless criminal damage to buisness and property is another.

I'm not sure it's going to be as big as people think plus it's going to have divided ideals as I bet you plenty of people are going to be chanting "No War in Libya" and the like despite in being a cuts protest.

Looking at the protest website I am not quite sure what they are marching for? I am all in favor of Jobs, Growth and Justice but I don't feel the need to travel down to London to say so. I am pretty sure politicians of all stripes would be in favor of them as well.
Just had a look at the site, just seems to reinforce the idea that computers/internet are lost on the great unwashed. "Can't march" then show your support by clicking this map. There goal of 10,000 supporters is on just past 6000.How many of these march attendees are claiming benifits or support from the state?

You might like to think that universities would take action but the example of Cambridge and Charlie Gilmour would suggest that they might not - quote from Cambridge Tab below (after their initial statement that as it was in the vacation it wasn't anything to do with them)I'm not sure it's going to be as big as people think plus it's going to have divided ideals as I bet you plenty of people are going to be chanting "No War in Libya" and the like despite in being a cuts protest.
Earlier today the University released this statement: “Following the release on bail of Girton College student Charlie Gilmour, the University Proctors are investigating their options and will be in discussion with the College authorities.”
They added, “No decision with regard to his actions has yet been taken.”

is it worth breaking out the ak47's for?
Only if we are allowed to use them with live rounds....When I was a student I went to Lectures and had work to do on the days off, are there really enough media students to arrange such a gathering or are the students not even taking advantage of the education they are complaining they can't afford?!

Two types of student go on protests - the militant NUS members who'll do anything their communist leaders ask (most NUS members are only members for the cheap beer) and those wanting an excuse for a day out.ewenm said:

A student can't actually join the NUS as an individual. College unions vote to affiliate themselves with the NUS. So a student is automatically a member of the NUS if their student union has voted to affiliate themselves even if they don't want to be. Several universities aren't affiliated; St Andrews aren't for example. plasticpig said:

It's what I despise most about these sort of groups! So you're going on a march for jobs, growth and justice, fair enough. But what are you actually going to DO!? I presume at the end they will formally be presenting their peer reviewed, objective and practical proposal to number 10? What's their 100 day plan for fast action, what's their 10 year roadmap? What's their projected growth targets?
What, they don't have any of that? Right... so they're just going to go and shout mindless chants at the police then. That'll help!
My thoughts on this are that as it has been demonstrated around the world that going all out mental with rioting is the way to bring about change, is this evidence not going to change peoples perceptions of what is effective when it comes to a protest... leading to
