Some involvement in the construction of THORP but minimal experience of an operational reprocessing environment, I have an important question for the seasoned nuclear engineers on here: is it possible to "zone out" of the Sellafield beep?
Not completely. You ignore the ping/pong, until it stops. Then run. There is a point to prompt evac though as the crit may occur again - solids in suspension - or the crit event may have ejected contam.

such as Tokaimura - I remember some interesting discussions on that very issue from that one! linky to better place to talk more rather than O/T here

If the alarm in Evap C or D goes off there's no point running.
Mentioned on here before that the nearest evacuation point was Paris apparently.

I was working there, on Evap D, I thought I heard B215 (I think that's Evap C) criticality alarm shut up once, I properly froze for what seemed like eternity! Luckily it was just my mind playing tricks.

Visiting Windscale 2 and listening to the beeps and boops was an odd feeling despite being assured we wouldn't need to run.If the alarm in Evap C or D goes off there's no point running.

Unfortunately this doesn't fit the Green message so is unlikely to be reported. Facts are so inconvenient.rovermorris999 said:

More good news. Extensive radiation study finds no internal cesium exposure in Fukushima children - Japan Times.
Three former executives at a Japanese power giant have been formally charged with negligence over the 2011 disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Well yes, if you measure the radiation inside the containment vessel, you'd expect quite a lot of it. That's normal. What's not normal is the 2m wide hole in the containment vessel. "Uruguay Syndrome" anyone?"Feb 3, 2017: The new radiation level, described by some experts as “unimaginable,”

Except they didn't measure it in any traditional sense of the word:
'Based on the “noise” in the images, the utility estimated that one area of the containment vessel was emitting radiation at a level of 530 sieverts per hour'
Having said that, I don't think anyone would actually want to go anywhere near to confirm with a real instrument! To help anyone not familiar with Sieverts as unit of dose: roughly 5 Sieverts in generally considered a lethal dose! so about 100 seconds gets you there....

So what's the solution ?
Can they use robots to remove the reactive bits and ship to selefield?
They'll have to be careful if they do. The noise on the camera image is being caused by the radiation. It will cause noise in any electronic component (which will be worse the smaller it is). Depending on what the component is you'll get different effects. Camera = bad image motor controller =random movement etc. Until it just dies that is. And then you've got a dead, radioactive robot on top of the pile. Can they use robots to remove the reactive bits and ship to selefield?
