I very much doubt they're measuring a robot's radiation dosage in Sieverts, either.

Anyone noticed under the picture at the top of the article it says:
article said:
The scarred landscape inside the exclusion zone close to the Fukushima nuclear reactor in Spain
confused

Journalists these days know fk all about anything except 'media-studies' mad

They also imply the devastation was caused by the nuclear leak, when of course it was caused by the tsunami

Do you think it is possible another Sarcophagus is on the cards for this site like Chernobyl?

Depends on the rock structure beneath the reactor - if it's likely that nuclear material could find its way into the sea then they'll have to remove it rather than seal it in situ

Doubtful.. Its right on the coast to easy to have everything shipped away and dropped down the Mariana Trench.

Unlikely- the damaged reactors are, largely, stable; Chernobyl they needed to first put the fires out then rebuild around it. Also I don't think the site layout lends itself to an over-structure but I haven't studied it closely.

About the only thing that went 'well' for Chernobyl was the reactor that went bang was at the end. Units 1, 2 or 3 would have been much harder to resolve.

Which already has traces of human contaminants in as it is... I'm not a Greenpeace type but was surprised during a few documentaries when that same fact popped up.

Last I heard of this the core was still too hot to even send in robots reliably - radiation kept buzzing out the RF signals. Meaning it just sits there.

Nasty st - shame it produces so much power off such a small amount of materiel.

ETA: Godzilla. Where is it?

"600 tons of fuel leaked out" - I'm guessing the journalist assumes nuclear fuel is a liquid like petrol...

The site has been sealed with an ice wall to stop the ground water, that said the actual health effects of the amount of radiation released through the ground water is pretty minimal and it is diluted to bugger all by the sea.

Unlike the Chernobyl sarcophagus there isn't really a big persistent hazard from airborne fission products. On reactor four they reinstated the outer shell of the reactor refueling floor, once that is reinstated on the other reactors that is probably enough of a structure to defuel the reactors.

Based on Three Mile Island timescales, they will probably defuel the reactors in around starting in around 2011 and it will take around 5-10 years to get the fuel out. Once that happens the remaining hazard will be pretty low, thought given how contaminated the plant is there is a decent chance it will be put into care and maintenance for 80-100 years then dismantled relatively conventionally.

That said given advances in robotics these timescales may be compressed.

Could they not try to use the heat energy it's giving off for energy generation/use it to pump water round etc
