A gentleman boxer. Pretty nifty around the golf course too.
As he quipped to Christopher Lee on the 1st green "Fangs ain't wot they used to be!"

Who knows what would've happened if that punch went in a few seconds earlier.

RIP our Enery.

My engagement do was at the Bull in Birchwood. Henry was there training for a fight, this was 1968. When a chap in a track suit came through out room I thought I recognised him as him as Henry and pointed him out to my dad, an army champion boxer, and he said: No, that's his twin brother.

The chap came over and said that not many people could tell them apart from 15' away and my dad said how much he admired Henry and had seen both of them boxing. They talked boxing for a few minutes and the chap left.

Five minutes later Henry came into the room, spoke with my dad for about ten minutes, politely refusing offers of food and drink, kissed my fiancee, shook hands with me and patted me on the back, saying how lucky I was. He then asked us to cheer him on and left the room.

He was training for the Mildenberger fight yet still took time out for his fans.

Met him when I was about 7 years old at a holiday camp on Hayling Island. Have a super cheesy picture of me giving him a 'punch' to the face. I think he lost a lot of money on the stock market ( and sold his belts ? ) and was doing PR type events.
Just seems one of those persons who doesn't ever get a bad word said about them.
I think he was a Lloyds 'name' and lost quite a lot there when they were exposed to some huge claims years ago.

A great quote by Henry during a tv debate -
Baroness Summerskill: Mr Cooper, have you looked in the mirror lately and seen the state of your nose?
Henry Cooper: Well, madam, have you looked in the mirror and seen the state of your nose? Boxing is my excuse. What's yours?

You can see his point:

He was and external Name at Lloyds, like many people earning money in the 70's.

Was practically wiped out in the late 80's and went through Equitas.

He was one of those few people for whom no one ever has a bad word for.

A great sportsman and an even greater roll model.
