As for 'new' car, I only meant new to me, it will still be something ~ 10 years old and worth £2-3k. I'll continue using my Pug shed as long as possible, though.
Do you really need to spend £2-3k on a car? We have just sold our 2010 Mini Cooper Clubman to save the £200 monthly payment. I went out and bought a 1999 BMW 318i Touring for £800 with a years Tax & MoT. It's perfect for what we need and cost's naff all to run!

Haha, not particularly! Let's just say that from the approx £2800 a month we jointly bring home we are lucky if we have anything left by the 20th of the month! This is purely spent on debts and going food shopping once a month!
I bet if you did and were honest we could drop your outgoings by at least 10%.

Ouch. £2,800 and £1k on rent? Is that purely rent or is that rent & house running costs?

Is this London by any chance?

I don't need to spend it no - but I would like something newer and safer to cart the little person about in. My Fiancee has a Kia Picanto and it doesn't strike me as a particularly safe little car. As mentioned though - I'm not about to buy anything until I can afford to buy it outright - I'm not getting in debt for anything again unless it's a mortgage further down the line.

My trusty Peugeot will keep me going for months / years yet, it's just a bit noisy / rattly and old.

The interview went very, very well however and it took me around 12 minutes to get there from my parents house, and it was only 8 miles away. This would half my commute and even in rush-hour traffic it would take significantly less time. I'm thinking a diesel may start to become impractical as it won't get warm enough in that time to be beneficial.

That is purely rent! Add an about £150 in council tax plus utilities and that's where a decent chunk of money goes each month. We are in Epsom, Surrey. It's mentally expensive to buy or rent around here and for what we have we get an amazing deal! The problem is if we move out of the area then we have to start paying a nanny during the day as we won't have parents close by to look after our Daughter while we're at work.

What do want out of living in Surrey as opposed to living elsewhere?

It was the free grandparent childcare!

My job is in Surrey and is well paid for what I do. Becky works in Central London so either gets the fast train or drives in. Plus of course the free Grandparent childcare which we would be stuffed without due to the hours we both work.

It might have been discussed before but...

Definitely! In a previous life, I had a job about 8 miles away and was up hill and down dale. To cut a long story short, I got the company to enrol on a cycle to work scheme, got my first ever road bike and my take home salary was about £30 a month less than previously. If I cycled more than half the time, I broke even. Fittest I have ever been, and more productive because of the early morning ride.

Do it!

yes 8 miles is nothing and it would make it free.

My advise OP, which you probably dont want to hear, DO NOT spunk your very limited money on a holiday. You do not 'need' one. I am going on one in August but have not had a proper one since last year. I havent needed one - wanted one is a different story but I have the money to do it!

The £350 spending and £150 fuel WILL not be the end. It will cost more than that - you know it, I know it, everyone knows it. Your parents letting you go along with them but on the condition that you pay for fuel to me says they dont exactly have much of their own money nor will be helping out but giving you spending money once away? How much do they charge you rent? Are they only not charging you in July because you are going away with them? If they will let the money go anyway then lets for argument say you spend £750 on the holiday, that could be over a grand (depending on rent) in one month that you dont have to spend!

Its very easy to just spend when you are not at home and in 'reality'. Go away for a weekend camping or something if you need to get away from things; less than £100 all in easily.

This whole thread is for nothing if you think nothing of spending £500+ (which it will be) on a whim of a holiday.

And, dont spend £3k on a new car obviously. Very many small cheap cars have 4+ star safety ratings if that is a concern. You dont need something big and heavy (and therefore thirsty) to take the little one around safely.

To sum up - dont spunk all your limited money on a holiday, dont get a new car, get out of your parents house.

A grand to rent a flat in Epsom?? Sounds dear to me. £1000 rent on that salary doesn't sound too bad, but you could live in surrounding areas for less than that, and still have the trains. Epsom isn't actually that nice either, so its not like you're paying for that aspect of it, unless you live in some of the nice roads with big houses etc, the town is quite grotty.

Tend to agree with the chap above, you do not 'need' a holiday. I haven't been on holiday for 18 months I don't think, I don't feel like I need one.

I'm going to go slightly against the grain here and say that when you're trying to be as frugal as possible it is good to factor the odd treat in, as if you're pushing it too far with the frugalness you'll get fed up with it and cave in sooner. Although having said that, if I was living with my folks I'm not sure I'd want to go on holiday with them too.

I do agree with the car comments, especially as you're running 2 cars already, keep the money saved up, so you have an emergency fund if you need to fix your current car, or if uneconomical buy a new one, or whatever else crops up in the mean time.

Indeed - the aim is not to minimise spending 'at all costs' as you might as well just jump off a bridge and then outgoings would be 0.

I just think the OP has the tendencies to be 'one of those people' who justifies their excessive spending to themselves and thats that.

As I said, go camping for a while it will cost a fraction of the price.

Not having two sticks to rub together is fine because even with a holiday and not having to pay rent in July, OP has told us he will be £150 'up' on where he would have been! But no he wont because the car needs sorting - again, trying to make up things to make himself feel better but it not really being true. OP you are only kidding yourself. Use the holiday money to properly sort the car out. If the cambelt goes and kills the car proper where will the money come from to buy another just to get you to work!

A lot of people need to really learn the difference between 'want' and 'need'.

It's a matter of balance. OP already has a car that works, so he doesn't need another one. And there are cheaper options that a flight to Malaga or the Canary Islands. I had a picnic on a fruit farm this weekend - and it was fun and healthy.

Oh me too - I am one! But man maths and justifying something when you just need to stretch a bit isnt the same as when you really have no money...
