The Mrs and I have a current account that we pay the bills out of, mtg, utilites, etc and food shopping. We both earn our own money so tend to go 50:50 on bigger purchases, pay for fuel out of our own accounts.

We used to do the Tesco club card points using their credit card but the deals seem to have dried up allot over the past few years. This has got me thinking of opening a joint credit card account that we'll pay off monthly and get some benefit out of, I could also stick my work expenses on it and claim back. For the time being air miles would seem like a decent shout but I know sod all about them. I get the basic concept i.e. spend £1 you get 1 air mile we do travel a bit never travelled anything better than premium economy. I assuming whatever points you amass you can buy more or just put these towards a the cost of a flight?

If someone could explain the pros and cons would be appreciated and any particular cards to go for/avoid. Planning on going to SA at the end of the year, think we could clock up about 10-12k by then.

Cheers

Forget the Air Miles.....you found a wife that will go 50:50 on bills yikes

I have a few friends who use the air miles cards but they've never interested me due to the various T&Cs.

Ever thought of paying for your daughter? to go through the Emirates training course??? Far better than air miles yes

Better still she's been promoted so now earns more than me! No daughter to put through Emirates training though when that does happen I'll have to retract my previous statement.

It seems like you have to spend 10 times what I could put through a credit card in a year to get quick benefits. I could be underestimating how much we spend on 'stuff' per month.

I have a BA AMEX.

Unless you are putting a very significant amount through the card you won't get anywhere close to 2 tickets to SA. I think on mine it would need a £50k spend & then that's only because a get a buy 1 get 1 free voucher.

I have a BA Amex and a Virgin Amex & Visa
That way I can get companion tickets from both every year and plenty of miles.
I also travel a lot so the miles all add up.

Virgin Amex and Visa, usually run a few grand a month expenses through it

then stay in Hotels that give me Virgin airmiles too and fly long haul Virgin everywhere

book car hire and other stuff through Virgin for more miles

basically focus everything on one airmile and usually build up 175-250K miles a year which is 2 1st class flights and usually manage a few more upgrade flights per year and a companion ticket, which basically gives a 1/2 price flight on holiday once a year somewhere nice

Do you think in the new eco environment of business, maybe air miles are no longer seen as an ethical benefit? scratchchin
