Not sure where you're based, but I certainly find Amex isn't accepted at a lot of places in the UK.

I have an Amex card which I use as much as I can for the cashback. It is generally accepted at bigger chains - the major petrol companies, supermarkets, etc. It quite often isn't accepted at smaller, independent retailers so I carry a Visa credit card which I use then (which gives me a lower level of cashback).

Examples of where I have spent money over the last month that don't accept Amex:
Evans Cycles
My local Chinese takeaway
The local "Pet and Garden warehouse"
Chainreaction cycles
Wiggle (hmm, I can see a theme here ...)
O2 for a SIM top-up for my house alarm
Local surf/skateboard shop
Local laptop repair shop
Local pub
Zsig (online retailer of sports equipment)
Cycle Surgery (I'm such a bike shop tart)
Local Italian restaurant
Justgiving website
Another local pub
Local farm shop

Having said that, I would still recommend an Amex if you can have it alongside another non-Amex card. The Amex customer service is always very good.

Drivel.

As I've said already (is this thing on etc.), I use my Amex almost exclusively for everything I spend. Currently racking up almost 100k Avios a year on it, which is a return flight for two to the US each year.

I think it's worth it.
What's that in monthly spend?
About £5-6k a month.

I spend about the same on my Amex Platinum. Not sure I want to carry on paying the £450 annual fee tho.

RBS Black credit card. Costs me about £18 a month.
I just looked at that as I am thinking of cancelling my £450 a year Amex Platinum card. Trouble is RBS seem to have discontinued it:-

If anybody knows of any other alternatives to Amex I would love to hear? I need\want Priority Pass, Travel Insurance and any other benefits.
I think you have to take the Black current account to get the black Mastercard, and I fogot to add that indeed you get a free Priority pass, which I use 30 - 40 times a year.

Black cards are usually by invitation, the Amex one certainly is and the Visa Infinite comes with the right bank account.

Both bring a host of benefits although it is very hard to beat Amex black, aka the Centurion card.

But there is no point in a card like that unless you travel a lot and use there services a lot.
