Do these jokers actually answer the phone? Twice today I've tried and been in a queue for over half an hour before giving up

Not had a statement from them for 2 years and know I must be very close to zero, but I'm stumped as to how I can find out if they won't answer the phone. Their website is just as useless given the value on there states it was last calculated 31/03/2013.

I recently just paid mine off just to avoid all the stuff that was going on with them. It wasn't too bad, but they wanted me to pay over £350 a month for my loan. Yes, I get a good salary and am happy to pay lots down, but living in Norway the living cost is really different which doesn't get taken into consideration properly it seems. Norwegians pay around £100 to compare. The system didn't pick up on me leaving my card payments from the previous smaller amount, but when the card ran out I ended up paying the rest all at once to avoid the letters (which half never seemed to arrive) and the monthly costs transferring each time. I have heard of others who have had a lot of problems with their payments/contacting them though.

Go through your payslips and enter the deduction amounts into the calculator.

I'm just about to pay mine off as well (graduated in 2004). They sent me a letter saying I'm about to finish paying it off and can I contact them. I now pay a direct debit of a set amount instead of it coming direct from my salary.

They normally answer the phone reasonably quickly when I have called them. Maybe try at an obscure time (i.e. not lunchtime)

Just be glad you haven't had it sold of to a debt collection company, like all the old style loans have been. Student Loans Company were a pleasure to deal with compared to these bds. mad

Indeed, a lot of uni terms started today, it couldn't be a worse time to call! It'll be calming down again by November but I'd expect it to still be pretty busy until then.

First thing in the morning would be your best bet if you really want to get hold of them.

I finished paying mine about 3 years ago but at the time they were a joke, there was huge delay in getting statements resulting in me over paying by over £1k. Got a cheque back but that didn’t stop them from taking more the next couple of month and then having to get another cheque back.

Interesting this has come up as I am in a similar boat. I think I should have a sub £3k balance outstanding and will pay it off this year. I also checked my balance to find it is a long way out of date (March 2013) and was told it would be updated once they received info on my repayments from the last tax year.

What happens towards the end? Do you keep paying until they receive your P60 tax then back pay the over payments?

I haven't got there myself yet, but I believe:

- if you do nothing, then you will probably overpay via PAYE, and will have to chase to get it back

- or, in the last two years they're supposed to contact you and get you paying via Direct Debit. You can also set this up yourself via the website. Then you can get the SLC to tell your employer to stop the PAYE deductions.

My experience of the SLC has made the DVLA seem like a well oiled machine. Incompetent does not even come close.
