I'm 24, basic of 31k but after shift pay and other guaranteed bonuses I'm on 40k. I'm aiming for 50 by the time I'm 30 which is doable. The good thing is that the work/life balance is great which I find just as important. I do 40 hour weeks with the odd bit of overtime (perhaps 10 hours a month). Also home by 3.30 most days as I'm only 15 mins from work at the moment.
JLR?

25k here. (and i was thinking it wasnt too bad)
im 35 and just got a baby boy.
got a morgage for the house last year and so far its going well.
work stupid hours but have all the weekend for myself / family.
would love to get paid more and don't mind to work as hard as needed.
but above all as its been said, the important is our sanity and happiness.

OP: That aint bad ya know. it's more than any of my mates. One has only just been employed as a pilot, but has a massive debt so there's the salary gone.

I earn at LEAST twice one of my closest mates, but guess who spends the least out of us two....

Aim of the game, earn more spend less enjoy life more biggrin

At 25 I was on about 25k I think. I happen to discover a side line business which took my earnings to 70k that year

I got sacked from the 25k a year job cos I failed some accountancy exams. I applied for a few jobs, didn't get any and so decided to make my business full time.

My earnings now firmly put me in the top 1% of earners. I know people who earn multiples more than me at my age.

Beyond a certain figure, and that figure is different for different people, more money makes little difference. Contentment is very important.

At university, I lived a very frugal lifestyle. and could do so again if it came to that

ETA, I'm 31 now

It's a hard life... It amazes me how they make any money!

Also amazes me how the whole workforce seems to live in Leamington Spa...

It is so subjective. Each person will have a different view of what a good salary is based on the life style they aspire to live. Also, where you are now (mid 20's) is where you will see the highest gains as you move company and gain promotions etc.

As long as you are comfortable at the present time that your income is giving you a life you are happy with then that’s all that matters.

No just not sure of the appeal as it seems an incredibly expensive place to live for what is a distinctly average area...

It is for the Midlands you are talking £1k a month for a decent 2 bed flat really of course compared to down South it is reasonable but that is to be expected as it appears people love paying silly money to live in a tiny flat in London :/

A good friend of mine worked for JLR and I went up to visit him in Leamington Spa. What a dump, I genuinely would live in Birmingham over Leamington Spa.

I don't think its a bad area to live as such but think they are far better options locally for a lower price to live in such as Solihull.

The main nightclub is called "Smack" which speaks numbers about the place...

Does it not tempt you to do what you do in Spain or somewhere, don't they earn multiple hundreds of thousands there?

the strange thing is that whatever i've earnt i've always felt like if i was on a couple of K more then that would perfect as that would be my buffer money for savings etc, the reality is with each payrise I get I make (poor) decisions that result in my baseline cost of living increase or by spending the money on things i previously wouldn't have bothered with which leaves me back in the same position, just maybe with more stuff etc which i don't need. The biggest problem with this is you then rely on at least earning what you do now and get stuck if you wanted to change career or have some time where your income would be nil/minimal

I guess it's all about quality of life, and achieving what makes you happy, for some people that's earning 6 figures in London, for others it's living somewhere with some open space and not requiring a massive income to sustain their lifestyle. some of the happiest guys i know earn circa 20k, have no work pressure and just live to their means without seemingly ever being bothered about having more, they're probably the winners
