My mrs got sent a letter today stating that she can claim back tax on things like uniform, washing of the uniform, shoes and union subs.

Is this kosher? I have a vague memory i heard someone on the radio saying they did this and it messed up there tax payments afterwards.

If you need to purchase specific items of clothing exclusively for work, then yes you can claim tax relief on the cost.

Not sure about washing them though, I doubt it.

My OH is a nurse and the tax office adjusted her tax code to take these things into account so she doesn't even need to fill in a return. Definitely deductible (though she gets the uniform supplied so that isn't).

She has to buy her own uniform? That's terrible.

there are 4 common rebates that peopleworking in healthcare get

1. shoes and hosiery -as you are generally required to supply your own shoes and hosiery although other uniform is provided / you get a clothing allowance (the clothing allowance isa hang over from thedays of the lunatic asylums where the staff wore uniform so when they started letting the mental Health cstaff wear mufit there was an allowance given )

2. laundering uniforms - IF your employer doesn't provide a laundry service - again the onld paternalisatics monolith NHS often provided a laundry service for uniform

3. Registration fee

4. professional association ( and professional indemnity insurance) and journal subscriptions

OH did this recently...IIRC they took about 20% or so of her refund but it was a simple and worthwhile process.
