Well I went back for another go:

Good morning and thank you very much for the fast and helpful information.

I don't recall a financial intermediary; Freeserve was my Internet Service Provider, and I bought the shares directly at their floatation in 1999.

My bank records only go back to 2009. The most likely option is that I kept the shares throughout and France Telecom sent me 996 Euros in 2004 - but I have no memory or record of this.

Is it possible to find out from 'your' end whether payment was made to me?
And they replied:

Shares are in either direct registered shares or bearer shares, and the company can only manage the shareholders who have direct registered shares, what was not your case.

Therefore we cannot make researches.

Besides, a company cannot pay directly the shareholders, so funds are deposited in a centralist bank and every banking network has to take contact with this bank agent to pay his own customers.
So on the balance of evidence is it time to write the shares off my spreadsheet and conclude '50% chance paid but forgotten/50% lost without trace' - or is there another angle/possibility?

They are right about who they can/can't contact.
How about trying Lloyds TSB registrars?
This link suggests they were involved in the key transaction for you here:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance...

Lloyds TSB Registrars, The Causeway, Worthing,
BN99 6DA (Telephone 0800 018 3039)
(or maybe tel: 0870 600 3952)

As also suggested here:
http://boards.fool.co.uk/what-to-do-with-my-shares...

Not to be confused with the registrars for Lloyds TSB shares...!

If it ever works virtual pints are fine!

So Lloyds TSB sold their registrar business to Equiniti.
Call 0845 607 6838.
Give them your name and the postcode of where you lived when you registered for Freeserve shares.
They "should" be able to tell you what happened.
Although if you did take the cash then it may not be on the system IIRC.
