Hi all, yesterday I recieved a forwarded letter from my old address. It's from HMRC telling me that I have failed to return my self assessment in time and now I owe them £100 (plus interest). Now I have never had to fill out a self assessment before, so am wondering why I would've had to now?

I'm a basic rate taxpayer with one income source that is taxed through PAYE.

Any ideas? Can I appeal the fine? Annoyingly this has happened on a weekend so I'm stuck until tomorrow until I can speak to someone at HMRC.

No I didn't receive the form. All this info has gone to my old address and has just arrived as forwarded post.

I'm in the armed forces, no company car, no expenses etc.

Phone HMRC and ask them -

a) when did they send out to you a Notice to Complete a Self Assessment tax return for 2013/14?

b) to what address did they send it?

c) why did they send it? (i.e. what made them think that you would need to submit one)

If they sent it to the wrong address, lodge a formal appeal against the penalty on those grounds.

It sounds like you will need to complete a 2013/14 tax return so I would get my skates on and submit one as quickly as you can.

Thanks,
Have registered for online return and will give them a call in the morning.

Where can I get hold of a paper form?

Too late for that now. You will have to submit the 2013/14 return on-line.
