late entry on this thread, but with 4 kids I may be qualified to comment

1350 quid on a stokke system, probably THE most expensive pram you can buy

even brand new, a mothercare full 'system' is under 400

a Maxi Cosi baby car seat is 150, as dear as you'll get

the next stage Britax/Römer top brand is about the same price

an Ikea cot is less than 100, changing table/cupboard about the same

bodies cost about 10 for 5, pyjamas maybe 2 for a tenner
you don't need hundreds of them either

and all that stuff is very resellable

where anyone gets 5 grand from is unbelieveable

edit: if you want affordable children, move to Germany wink
70% wage for your year off work
in Düsseldorf max €500 a month childcare, no matter how many you have

Sadly though you'd have to live in Germany

Where was the cot, dexterity toys days out heating on year round higher water bills due to daily baths washing machine on daily tumble dryer too 2/3rds of the year holidays only during our of tern time additional holiday costs
Bigger car
Bigger food bill
Nappies
Nappy rash ointment - also other creams where if they get a rash it's bloody pricy.
Nipple cream as your wife will not enjoy cracked nipples.
Your kids friends birthday presents

And yet just 50km away we are paying €600ish per month for one child 2 days per week.

Stauatory maternity leave is only 3 months, and the Mrs extended this by 3 months on half salary (lucky to have this option).... painful to be reminded how ridiculously expensive it is to live in NL frown
6 weeks here in this part of the UK

living in Germany, yes, Düsseldorf number 5 city for standard of living worldwide

cot is there

heating on year round? it's 20° at the moment, the baby is outside

dexterity toys? please
I've never bought a baby toy, you get loads of that kind of stuff given, but it's hardly necessary

the 5 grand quoted was to buy baby equipment, not for food and holidays

daily baths? no, certainly not for a newborn
food bill, again, for a newborn? a breastfed newborn at that, no
nappies, cheap nowadays, supermarket own brand
cream etc are not that expensive, it's certainly not filling up your 5 grand

kids friends birthday presents? yeah, that 5 quid every couple of weeks soon adds up, but you can deduct the cost of buying toys, cos other friends are buying them for you at your kid's party

I forgot to mention that from age 3, kindergarten places are guaranteed and free

you pay a small sum for after school care when they start at 6/7 (school is only til one) about €200, again, you pay only for one kid

I would say it could be done a lot cheaper, but our initial costings were around £2K (cot, drawers, changing area, clothes, nappies, toys, push chair, buggy, car seat etc.) and per month our additional expenditure was around £250 (clothes, toys, trips out, food etc.) for the first 12 months. Not all of this was essential and everything is still there for number two use in the future.

My son is now 17 months old and just finished his first half week at nursery. He has been at home full time with mum for all his life. He was upset at first, but now seems to be settling in. It is very expensive (£920 per month), but necessary if mum wants/needs to go back to work. Mum's wage covers the childcare and leaves a bit for additional spending/saving. When we pick him up we get a card detailing what he has done that day, what he has eaten, how long he slept for and nappy usage etc. It is upsetting at first, but he enjoys running around the gardens there and interacting with other kids. The people who look after also seem to genuinely care about him, which is a big positive and look forward to seeing him tne next day.

You're still paying for all this, just not directly.
